Geely to buy Volvo in February 2010


This is what the plan is so far.

Volvo would be Chinese own in a few months.
At least they would still be around.

  1. I would buy a Volvo because Volvo built it's reputation on safety. I would not buy a Geely. As long as the new owners do not compromise the safety of the cars, they should do well. So, would Volvo then be the first Chinese car in the U.S. market with an established dealer network.

  3. I have owned Volvo cars for many years now. With this news I have no desire to purchase another one. In fact, all the more to get rid of my current 07 XC70. If this is true then this will be a sad end to a great history. By the way, are not several Ford cars loaded with Volvo technology and parts? What does this mean for these Ford cars; Taurus and MKS)?

    Well this is only the beginning anyway, look at Buick…

  4. I owned a Swedish made 2008 Volvo S40 the thing had so many electrical problems that I got rid of it as soon as I could. I don't care who builds it I will not buy another one. I traded it in for an 2009 Acura TSX.

It was bad enough when Ford bought Volvo and took everything "Volvo" out of the cars in a feeble attempt to create their own BMW and get their executives away from having to drive around in Town Cars. Now the Chinese are going to own it? Good Lord. Just close the doors on it and let it be remembered for what it was. Now the Chinese will have access to a US dealer network to peddle their other junk… just what we need.

  7. LOL, Volvo technology doesn't suddenly become Chinese technology (as in something the Chinese created) just because they own the company. I don't see this magical world where the subsidiary companies lose all influence when the Chinese get involved as opposed to the Americans or Germans….

  8. I have an 2005 S40 T5. It's my third Volvo and I love it. Looks like this will be my last. The Chinese build fine, cheap disposable stuff. I will never buy a Chinese vehicle. Volvo has provided a significant amount of safety and platform R&D to Ford, or that's the perception anyway. However unfounded, Ford has a stigma of building unsafe vehicles. The close partnership with Volvo and their reputation for over-engineering safe cars has really been good for Ford. It is going to be terrible for them to lose that connection. And to sell this knowledge to the Chinese is truly pathetic.

    I love the old square 240s. But the reality is, Ford improved Volvo tremendously. Volvo went from building quirky boxes for earth mothers and community college professors, and began building quirky cars that were a viable alternative to cars like BMW, Audi, and Acura. If it weren't for Ford's purchase in '99, Volvo would have gone away completely. It's a huge loss for Ford, and a dumb move to disconnect themselves from such a well respected brand.

    Indians bought Land Rover and Jaguar, and both brands are doing fine.

    The Chinese bought IBM's PC division and combined it with Lenovo; there aren't any problems with their laptops.

    Volvo is still Volvo- safe, expensive, and incredibly unreliable. I fail to see how the new Chinese owners can make Volvo cars any less reliable than they currently are.

    the Chinese will get (after a short while) NOTHING
    as Volvo will have evaporated

  14. ok first of all, volvos while still considered very safe, is no logner the safest, many other manufacturers now matches volvo in terms of safety. furthermore, volvo scores below industrial average in terms of vehicle dependability, many of those brands that matches volov in safety feature are already FAR more reliable. all of you saying you wouldn't drive a chinese own volvo/saab, at least try to provide a reason, otherwise you just sound like a racist redneck

  15. I agree with Anon 3:45. Chinese ownership doesn't mean Volvos suddenly become 1-star rated like the finest that Chery has to offer. Why can't it be probable that Volvo safety makes a Chinese brand crashworthy for the first time ever?

    The only "suck" of the whole deal is that Geely is the buyer and not the more desirable Brilliance.

  16. I'm not a big Volvo fan, but surely this can't be too bad a deal, Volvo gets to survive, and if the safety technology finds its way it to future Geely cars, so might Geely owners in the event of an accident.

  17. I agree with stuffghettopeoplelike. The takeover will probably mean that Geely will learn from Volvo how to make their cars safer, not the other way round. Paople who say they will never buy another Volvo because of this (especially those who had been loyal to the brand before) are overreacting.

    What the new Jaguar looks like is irrelevant with how Tata is managing the brands.

    In fact, Tata is doing better than Ford ever did, since both brands turned a profit last quarter.

    Who knows, maybe Geely will do a better job of managing Volvo than Ford did as well.

    Huh??? This has got to be the DUMBEST statement I've heard in quite a while.

    A profit in 1 specific quarter, where you are spending NOTHING on R & D (because Ford spent the last 8 years doing it FOR you) is PROOF of a "well-managed" company?

    Please refrain from commenting on subjects that you are overwhelmingly IGNORANT on — like how to run a business.

  21. I'm not well informed here, but I think it's a bad move for Ford to dump Volvo.
    The Mazda3 did so well, in my opinion thanks the S40. Volvo has some great cars that could work out really well (S40, V40, C30 come to mind) but the S60 and S80 don't stand out as necessary.
    I think keeping Volvo, but reducing their lineup, and sharing more with Ford and Mazda would be product for all three brands.
    I'd rather see Lincoln and Mercury die – make Volvo the top line instead.
