Next generation Genesis G80.

A new report from Korea mentions the next-generation Genesis G80 sedan being delayed. A delay mostly due to the new sedan receiving multiple powertrain options, instead of being an electric car only, as previously planned.

Genesis recently terminated the EV version of the current G80 sedan in the US due to very poor sales. Something that could also be attributed to its high base price of over $76,000. Which is quite a bit more than a Lucid Air Pure.

Late ext year, the current generation G80 will be available as a Hybrid. A few months after the launch of the GV80 Hybrid SUV. The Hybrid system will use the 2.5 Liter Turbo engine and 2 electric motors. I guess the novelty will keep the current G80 going for a year or two. By that time, the new generation will be ready.

The next Genesis G80 will now be offered as a Hybrid, EV, and even with a range extender. However, the new generation isn’t expected until 2028 at the earliest.

I am not sure Genesis can wait that long for a new sedan. The current generation came out over 5 years ago. It still looks good, but in 3 years it will be an old model. Sales haven’t set anything on fire in the US so far. Its best year was back in 2017 when the previous generation sold over 17,000 units. That number slowly tumbled down to around 400 last year. 3 years will be a long time to wait for US Genesis dealers…
