Unlike what we thought last year, according to a new rumor, a next-generation Genesis G70 sedan is still part of the brand’s future. As an EV.
Which is a bit surprising. Just a few months ago we heard that Genesis had canceled work on the next generation. Apparently, the next-generation G70 was planned to be larger than the current one. It would have to compete with the larger and probably more profitable G80 sedan.
I guess someone at Hyundai changed their mind and it seems the project is back on the table.
The new rumor also mentioned it would be a pure EV. It will be based on a new upcoming EV platform from Hyundai that will be shared with the new GC90 SUV and Kia EV8 sports sedan. This does make sense. The current EV platform is now a few years old and things are moving fast in the EV world.
However, last December Genesis US mentioned they would move away from their goal of being a pure EV company. At least not as soon as planned. And would actually start offering hybrid models in the US “soon”. Which was the opposite of what they had said just a few months ago. The official word was that all their new models would be EVs, starting in 2025. I guess the Hybrids could be for the US market since their official goal in Europe is still to quickly become an EV-only brand.
That would put them ahead of everyone else except Jaguar. And In the US, Cadillac. The strategy has been working pretty well for Cadillac since the Lyriq EV is now their second most popular model behind the Escalade.
No matter what, a new good-looking sedan coming up is always good news…
