The New Range Rover GT Is Basically a Luxury Sedan.

Well, that’s quite a surprise. Of course we’ve seen spy shots of this car over the past few months, but we all though it was the new 2nd generation Range Rover Velar. Turns out it was an all-new Range Rover model called the GT. And it is basically a sedan.

I remember about a rumor a couple of years ago, mentioning that Range Rover was working on a vehicle that would be lower and actually more like a sedan. Which sounded a bit crazy at the time. And here we are.

So this is not the new Velar, although one is probably coming since Range Rover says the new GT is not replacing the Velar. This car is a full EV, just like the upcoming new Jaguar 01 sedan. And it looks lie these would actually compete against each other, which is just plain weird.

And I must say, both cars look pretty similar. Of course the new Range Rover isn’t as angular, blunt and brutalist. And yet, it could be a sister car to upcoming Jaguar. Both are designed by Gerry McGovern, which makes a lot of sense. 

The new car will use the new EMA EV platform. And Hybrid trims could be offered later. 

Inside, things also look a lot like what we have seen so far of the new Jaguar sedan. Even the steering wheel look a lot like the one in the Jag. Otherwise, it is pretty generic. Again, that large center tablet and its thinner/smaller companion behind the steering wheel is in everything these days. End in a lot less expensive cars like all upcoming Hyundai models. It’s really too and the designers couldn’t find anything more special for such a high end car. 

Speaking of high end, no one seems to know if the new GT will be above the Velar or not. Or even above the Range Rover Sport. Who knows. 

I guess we will see much more about this very soon. Meanwhile, the illustrations above might give us a more realistic look at the new Range Rover “sedan/not a sedan”.

It makes me wonder if other SUV manufacture like Jeep will their luck and come up with a lower 4 door car…
