Lincoln Needs a Bold New Continental Convertible.

The only future Lincoln product we’ve heard about is the next generartion Nautilus, which will now be built in the US instead of China. And maybe a new SUV based on the new Ford Universal Ev Platform. No cars. And especially, not a 4-door convertible. And yet…

It could really be what Lincoln needs to put it back on the map. However, while the 4-door luxury car market is small, just imagine how minuscule the appeal would be for a large 4-door luxury convertible. Convertibles in general are less popular than ever as well. And yet. The Lincoln Continental convertible quickly became a legend. A new one would not have to be that popular, just impressive. It could actually be most “niche” vehicle produced. Something great in a Lincoln showroom next to the multitude of lookalike boxy SUVs. This would put Lincoln on the cover of everything. At least for a while. A new Continental Convertible could also be based on Ford’s new “Universal EV Platform” to keep costs way down. And maybe even turn a small profit. Or at least not loose to much money. And who really cares. Lincoln does need an image boost.

The good old Lincoln Continental started life back in 1940, as a 2-door coupe and convertible. However, most of us remember the 4th generation sedan produced from 1961 to 1969. While the much more boring 5th generation produced from 1969 to 1979 became one of the most popular cars in 1970s TV shows. It seems they were in every episode of every show.

The convertible model was available right away from the 1961 model year. It became even a bit larger in 1966, and a glass rear window was added. 1967 was the final year for the convertible model, with only about 2300 of them sold that year.

I say it’s time for something gutsy and spectacular from Lincoln. Something special and very different. And not something likethe ridiculous $400,000 Cadillac Celestiq. Something most of us can actually see driving around, even if we cant afford one…
