Finally, the real new Saab 9-5!

Last Updated:

Here it is.

Engines will be a 220hp version of the 2.0 Liter turbo and a 300hp 2.8 Liter V6.
Europe will also get a smaller 1.6 Liter with 190hp, as well as 2 versions of the 2.0 Liter Diesel, with 160 and 190hp.

It does look pretty nice, but is it enough to put the brand back on the map?
Plus, the 9-5 is an expensive car. They wouldn’t sell that many of them no matter what.

What they need is a super modern 9-3. Right now…

  1. I don't like the front, and I have problems with the instrument cluster. It's like the cluster's wearing shutter shades. I would think of Kanye West every time I got in the car.

  2. I'm looking forward to seeing it in person, but I'm certainly not quivering with anticipation. I'm sure it's a pig. There is something "A-Frame house/ pin-headed" about it, that in combination with that big butt, is reminiscent of a middle-aged large-framed woman.

  3. There are obviously some extremely talented make-up artist doing there best to put lipstick on a pig of a package. I can just visualize it plowing and scrubbing through every corner, wallowing, dipping, heaving through bends and crests.. Another GM boat!!

  4. It's a pleasant enough design, but I was hoping for something more avant garde, more cutting edge.

  5. It lost its saabness. I thought it was some kind of Chrysler with that grille. Shame!

And you are correct Vince, the old 9-5 did not find a lot of homes either.

  6. The c-pillar of this car reminds me of the 1966 Oldsmobile Tornado. Not a bad thing really. This car looks like a "car of the Future" or concept car from the 1970's.

  7. I own a 9-3 convertible and love the Saab brand. However, this car could have been better as long as we have been waiting. The grill isn't as aggressive as the current 9-3, sad. And he interior, wow. It keeps with the Saab tradition but that's not even good enough to keep up with Volvo. At least Volvo is interesting and nice enough to be an alternative to the Japanese entry-level lux market.

I hope these are pre-production interior shots. Although I am guessing that they are the real thing. And I hope the front end doesn't look this long in person.

  8. from the start of the spypix, I expected to need umpteen excellent photos or In Person viewing to make an honest assessment…

  10. Warren, how do you like your convertible?
I still have great memories from my 9-3 drive in Europe last summer….

  11. Hey Vince. Please post a profile pic of the '66 Oldsmobile Toronado with a profile pic of the new 9-5. The c-pillar/rear window shape and roofline are very similar. Like I said above. This car reminds me of a concept car from the 1970's.

  12. I think it needs more and bigger vents in front of the driver. Jees, it must feel like your in the middle of a freakin' hurricane in there with the fan on high!

  13. I like the back more than the front.. it is more edgy. I am disappointed that they couldn't put the AeroX headlights into production form for the 9-5. I just think the front is too conservative. The interior is very nice in my opinion. I don't know why everyone is complimenting the Volvo interior… I think it is one of the worst out there.

At least the 9-5 has all new architecture to ride on and with the new Xwd, it could be quite nice. With this, the new 9-4 and a revised 9-3, I think Saab has a brighter future than in a very long time. As it becomes more independent from GM, I think we'll begin to see more of a transformation ala Jaguar.
