Next Toyota GR86.

Last Updated:

We were just talking about a new sedan and even a wagon version of the next-generation Toyota GR86. Now we have even more info and a new illustration of the next coupe.

It seems Toyota is actually considering a hybrid powertrain for the next generation, which is not surprising at all. They are betting the next 2 to 3 years on all hybrids, all the time. (Until their next-generation EVs are ready). By this time next year, almost everything they sell in the US will probably have some sort of hybrid powertrain.

The newest rumor about the next Toyota GR86 mentions a new Hybrid with a 3-cylinder 1.4 Liter Turbo engine. Which could produce up to 300HP. The current model comes with a 2.4 Liter engine from Subaru with 228HP.

Replacing the Subaru powertrain with a new Toyota Hybrid probably means there will be no Subaru BRZ version this time around.

With only 4188 units sold, (Vs. over 11 000 for the Toyota version) I don’t think Subaru dealers will miss the BRZ too much…

That engine is NOT a Turbo. It’s a Boxer engine.

Also – it’s the Subaru BRZ (not BRX).

  2. It was silly not to have a hybrid in the current model. I would had been much more tempted to buy one. Fuel economy on the petrol engine isn’t impressive.
