2027 VW Amarok.

Last Updated:

The current, second-generation VW Amarok pickup came out in 2022. And yet, the company has just released a teaser for a new one coming out as a 2027 model. And that teaser is pretty ghastly, on so many levels. And yes, it is official.

The non-official photo illustration below it looks 100 times better, and also much more realistic. No, the next Amarok will not look like a cartoon character.

The current VW Amarok is built by Ford in South African and is based on the Ford Ranger. Basically, what the Honda Prologue is to the Chevrolet Blazer. In the mid-size pickup world.

However, things will drastically change for the third generation. The next model will not be based on a Ford anymore, but a Chinese pickup from SAIC, called the Maxus. Yes, “Maxus”…

That Maxus pickup has to be one of the worst-looking things on earth. However, this is mostly due to the intensely ghastly huge grille. Which VW will thankfully remove and redesign.

I guess for some reason, VW cannot, or doesn’t want, to come up with its own pickup for the South American market.

This is probably a much cheaper way to go. But that Maxus-based truck will not be better looking than its Ranger-based predecessor…

  1. Bear in mind that Argentina was the primary production source for the first gen Amarok. It is still in production there and the second gen Amarok has not been in introduced into that market. The second gen vehicle is built at a Ford plant in South Africa.
So the SAIC-sourced design will be effectively a 2nd generation Amarok for Argentina and associated markets, bypassing the South African-built vehicle. The latter will continue for Europe and many other markets.
