VW Touran EV.

Last Updated:

Apparently, VW is seriously considering replacing the European Touran van with a new EV model.

The Touran came out in 2003 and is currently only in its 2nd generation. The current model came out 10 years ago. That’s right. 10 years…

After that long, sales are naturally “not what they used to be”. The current model’s best year was in 2016 with over 164,000 of them sold. That compares to under 34,000 in 2023. I’d say it’s about time for a new one.

Unfortunately, that new EV generation is not around the corner yet. Since the new one is rumored to be “under review”. That means it’s probably still years away.

A new VW Touran EV could be a very nice addition to VW’s EV portfolio, as a smaller and cheaper alternative to the ID. Buzz. The ID. Buzz might be the coolest thing on the road but it’s pretty big. And super expensive. Something smaller with a cool retro design would still be roomy enough for tons of people. And way more affordable as well.

Something like this could actually be the rebirth of the old VW Bus. Something fun, compact, and affordable. And since VW announced they will use regular names for their upcoming EVs (instead of I.D something), I say call it “Microbus”.

Whether or not it comes to the US is another story. Since VW never sold the Touran over here.

VW Touran.
