2028 Buick Envision kills Chevy Bolt.

Just a few weeks ago, when Chevrolet introduced the revised 2027 Bolt, GM officially mentioned, “It will begin shipping to customers early next year and will be a limited run model”. The “limited run” part confused a lot of people. Why? How? Now we know that it will be built for about 18 months in Kansas. After this, the factory will start building the Buick Envision. Which, so far, has been exclusively built in China and imported to the US.

The current generation of the Buick Envision came out in 2020. That means that in almost 2 years, it will be a third generation. The new SUV built in Kansas will be an all-new model. And by that time, probably a hybrid or PHEV. Or even a range extender model.

Sales of the Envision have been very decent for GM, with over 47,000 of them sold in 2024. (just over 41,000 last year). I can see why they want to keep it going. That, and tariffs. The Buick SUV has become pretty pricey these days. Now starting at over $41,000. From $35,000 2 years ago.

The question remains: what will happen to the Bolt? What if it turns out to be a hit for GM? They brought it back in the first place because there were buyers for it. It is not better than ever and cheaper than ever. You would think sales could be quite brisk. Does “limited run” mean a new one with a new name will come out in 2 years? Or be replaced by something totally different?

GM has mentioned a “new Bolt family” a couple ot times last year. Which is now quite confusing.

No matter what, it looks like a US-built Envision is coming for sure. With no tariffs and more profit for GM. Even if it’ll cost more to build in the US.

The illustration above shows what the upcoming 3rd-generation Buick Envision could look like. Hoping the real thing turns out a bit more original…

  1. Dear Leader running amock means changing plans and placation. I bet GM still plans to do all EVs in the KC area facility and views the Buick Envision as a temporary thing. They know he’s not going to live forever.

  2. Your headline is incorrect! The Fairfax plant is being converted to internal combustion with the Chevy Equinox coming first. So if the Chevy Bolt is being “killed” fir or by anything, it’s the Equinox!
