The Lincoln Town Car Could Return. But Not the Way You Expect

The Lincoln Town Car disappeared in 2011, but the idea behind it never really died. A modern version could absolutely revive that classic big and soft American luxury sedan. Although the traditional buyer base is aging, limousine fleets have largely moved on to big SUVs.

What most buyers didn’t want was something like the 2017 Lincoln Continental. A front-wheel-drive-based AWD sedan derived from the Ford Mondeo. Despite being stretched, it never quite looked or felt like a true flagship. It was pricey, and its interior, filled with shiny plastic trim, lacked the substance expected from a modern Lincoln.

What could work better is a proper rear-wheel-drive, or even AWD, full-size sedan, echoing the proportions and presence of the original Town Car. But the old Ford Panther platform is long gone, and adapting something like the Ford Mustang architecture would be costly and complicated. And basically would end up really weird…

Ironically, the most realistic path forward may be electric. A new Lincoln Town Car built on Ford’s all-new dedicated EV platform could be smoother, quieter, and more powerful than any of its predecessors. While also being more cost-effective to produce. The idea may sound unconventional, but it fits perfectly with where luxury is heading.

Meanwhile, Cadillac is reportedly exploring new electric sedans. If those models reach production, they could push Lincoln to bring a sedan back to its now SUV-heavy lineup.

The Town Car still enjoys a loyal following across generations. Its reputation for durability means many examples remain on the road, often priced around $10,000. It’s an appealing option for anyone wanting traditional luxury without the high cost.

Of course, once you start browsing, you might also stumble across the Lexus LS, just as reliable, more advanced, and similarly affordable on the used market.

Eventually, you realize you don’t actually need another car. And that you’ve spent far too long watching Town Car and Lexus LS videos on your phone.

Maybe it’s just time to go to bed. And dream of a brand new, classic Lincoln Town Car.
