2028 Toyota Celica Preview.

There has been rumors about a new generation Toyota Celica for years. Especially now, after statements from various Toyota suits. The latest one being Mr. Hiroki Nakajima, who it the brand’s VP.

Mr. Nakajima recently mentioned the Celica being part of Toyota’s future sports car plans. Which would be great news. but as I mentioned earlier, the rumored mid-engine 400HP bullet would not be a proper Celica. In my book, a Celica is a 4 seater sporty coupe. Not a Corvette competitor. A new Celica would have to compete against the new Honda Prelude.

I have been driving the Prelude in the past few days, and it reminded me of what a new Celica should be. A comfortable yet sporty coupe. Something sensible and affordable. With a modern clean design. the illustrations above show what such a new Celica could look like. With a retro feel that reminds me of the 3rd generation. Produced from 1981 to 1985. Which was also available as a Supra model.

At over $42,000, there is no doubt the new Prelude is overpriced. Especially for what you get. Or rather, what you DON’T get. Like a sunroof, or power seats. There would be plenty of room for Toyota to squeeze a new 2 door coupe with 4 seats above the base Camry. Or even the Corolla. A cool looking new Hybrid using Toyota’s next-generation powertrain with the all-new 1.5 Liter engine.

I really think there would be a market for a really nice looking, practical 2 door Toyota Hybrid. Even if based the current Prius, it would still be a lot cheaper than the Prelude.

Let’s just hope something fun and affordable happen. It can. No one was thinking of a new Honda Prelude before the concept was unveiled last year. So whoo knows…
