Alfa Romeo Needs This More Than Just SUVs: A New Spider Convertible.

Alfa-Romeo is currently part of the giant Stellantis tornado of car brands. It seems everything is in flux and anything can happen. It also seems the next Giulia sedan is not just delayed but has effectively been canceled. That means the historic sporty Italian brand could soon offer only Crossovers  and SUVs. Just like so many other brands these days. What Alfa-Romeo really needs is a new convertible. A new Spider convertible. 

The last time we heard about a new Spider was back in 2013 when a new Alfa convertible was being developed with the new 2015 Mazda Miata. That never happened and we got the new Fiat 124 Spider instead. Which, as it turned out, was never the most popular car in the world. 

The classic Alfa Spider came out in 1966 and was produced until 1993. With many modifications along the way. The car is best known by film lovers as the “Graduate car” driven by the Dustin Hoffman character in the classic film. 

Stelantis has plenty of platforms that could be used for a new Spider Convertible. And probably already employs great Italian designers that can come up with something quite impressive. (The illustrations above show what a new Spider could look like). 

Currently, Stellanits offers very few convertible models. Of course, you have the Maserati Gran Cabriolet. And at the other end of the spectrum, the Fiat 500 Cabriolet. In between you have your classic Jeep Wrangler. None of these could be the base for a new Spider. But Stellantis has been working on the new STLA One platform. It will show up in the new Chrysler Airflow here in the US. In Europe, it will first be used for the next-generation Peugeot 208, a much smaller car than the Chrysler. 

STLA One is a multi energy 800V platform. It can offer ICE, hybrid and EV powertrains. You would think that one of all these new models based on the platform could be a new Alfa-Romeo Spider.
