2028 Alfa-Romeo Giulia.

Last Updated:

We have been hearing about a next-generation Alfa Romeo Giulia (As well as the Stelvio SUV) for quite a while now. We’ve even seen many prototypes of the next-generation Stelio driving around. Now we have a bit more info.

As usual these days, car makers are getting cold feet and are stepping away from their “all EV” plans. This is exactly what is happening at Stellantis. The new Alfas were both scheduled and engineered to be new EV-only models. Now they are making sure the new generation will be available with ICE or Hybrid powertrains as well. Exactly what Dodge is doing with the new Charger (although that might have been the plan all along for the muscle car).

The official word about Alfa-Romeo is now “We had to make a product development decision because we were focused on electric vehicles. Now, having to rework the engines, we need a little more time to meet our customers’ needs. So we’re also looking at other types of powertrains for our future cars.” And that means “multi-energy”. Tye is not giving up on the EV version, but these cars will have to be available with other powertrains as well.
As mentioned before, it seems the STLA platform is pretty good at offering different powertrains. The “multi-energy” switch might also explain the Jeep Recon delay.

The current Stelvio and Giulia will be in production until 2027, instead of being replaced next year.

While Alfa Romeo sales have been up by 20% this year, this is mostly due to the all-new Alfa-Romeo Junior compact Crossver. Which is on sale in Europe but not over here. Sales are dropping fast every year in the US. With just 12,843 units sold in 2022. Fewer than 11,000 in 2023 and about 8,900 last year. It will be even less this year with just 4,780 units so far.

Alfa might not be able to wait another 2 years for something new in the US.

  1. Long ago, FCA should have moved Alfa to partner with Ferrari.
They could have made a complementary range at an ‘entry level’.
    Think Lotus to Aston.
Alfa small lightweight sportscars, Ferrari the GT and hypercars.
This would have given room for Lancia to take the premium level cars, and Maserati to go super luxury, like Bentley.
