Audi will soon introduce a second generation of the good old Audi A2. This time it will be based on the VW ID-3 Neo. Unlike the cool and futuristic compact model it produced from 1999 to 2005. 

The original model was truly ahead of its time, with lightweight construction and a very strong focus on efficiency. The new version aims to reinterpret that concept as a modern electric vehicle. And Audi is already claiming it is the most efficient vehicle it has ever produced. Total EV range could actually be over 400 miles. Up to 4 different types of motors could be available. With power ranging from 167HP to 321HP.

From early teasers and illustrations, the new A2 already looks sleeker and more refined than its VW counterpart. As expected, Audi appears to be pushing a more premium, aerodynamic look. Something clean and modern. However, not as original as the 1st generation was when it came out. At least, there is also no huge, ghastly fake Audi grill in sight. Which is great news. The illustrations above are very close to the real thing. And they show a pretty nice design. So far, the worst part is the door handles. Something that is very similar to the ones on the Mustang mach-e or the new Volvo EX60. These just look ridiculous and are not even close to easy and convenient to use. Quite a weird choice indeed. 

As expected, the Audi version will sit above the VW in terms of pricing and features. However, it will still be Audi’s cheapest EV. According to Audi’s official statement: “Electric mobility must work seamlessly in daily life—efficient, compact, and confident.” That is one generic statement that can apply to almost any car. Or even a toaster. It just means nothing.

The new Audi A2 will debut very soon, in Europe. And of course, it is not scheduled for North America. Instead, the all-new Audi model we’ll be getting is the giant Q9 SUV.
