2028 Kia K5: The Midsize Sedan Isn’t Dead After All

After earlier news to the contrary, apparently, the Kia K5 sedan is not going anywhere. At least for now. As it is due soon for a major facelift.

It seems Kia sees a future for its mid-size sedan after all, even in the US. I guess positive sales numbers of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord might have something to do with this. And Toyota didn’t even need a new generation to keep the Camry popular. A new interior, front end, and rear end, plus a standard Hybrid, were all it took.

With Hybrid sales way up in the US recently, it would seem like a good idea to make a hybrid powertrain standard on the revised K5. And a new PHEV is also rumored to be available as well.

You can do a lot to make a car look new while using the same platform. That’s what Honda did with the current Accord. Toyota went a cheaper way with a refresh of the previous model. The illustrations above show what a heavily revised 2028 Kia K5 sedan could look like. Not just a mid-cycle facelift, but not a full new generation either. Something less futuristic than the current one, but more in line with current Kia models.

Nissan is giving up the market by killing the Altima. Ford, Stellantis, and GM have all abandoned sedans. And so did Mazda.

Right now, the K5 is not available as a Hybrid. What you get is a good old 2.5 Liter engine or a 290HP Turbo version. Something probably very few buyers actually get. A new Hybrid and PHEV trim would probably do wonders for the bottom line. However, with over 72,000 sold last year, the K5 is not doing too badly. (And better than the Sonata)These are, of course, not Camry or Accord numbers. But it’s worth investing some money into it. And these numbers could really go up with Hybrid versions available.

Inside, you know it will get the new Pleso system with that giant tablet screen in the center of everything. There won’t be any surprises, but it could still be a nice alternative to the Accord and Camry.

Apparently, a new Accord is also on its way in a year or two. And who knows when Toyota will get us a real new Camry.
