2029 Toyota Corolla Cross Preview.

A new Toyota is coming soon. Very soon. Probably before the end of the year. That means a new Corolla Cross SUV will not be far behind. Probably showing up around a year or so after the redesigned sedan.

While the Corolla Concept from last year was pretty futuristic and actually quite stunning, the production version will be, of course, less dramatic. However, it might still look very nice. But Toyota doesn’t have a fantastic track record with its designs. I think the current Prius is one of the best looking cars currently out there, but that’s about it. The Crown was a huge letdown, and the RAV-4 is a busy mess inside and out. I have to say, their offerings in the Chinese market are much more attractive.

The illustrations above show what a redesigned Corolla Cross could look like. Making sure it does look new, while not being too good looking. Which is probably more realistic. At least something a bit more original than the current breadbox-looking small crossover.

What we do know is that it will likely adopt Toyota’s new 1.5-liter engine, most likely paired with a standard hybrid setup in the U.S. ull gas versions are expected to still be offerd in some markets.

The new Corolla will also be offered as a PHEV or even a full EV. You would think it makes sense to offer the same powertrains in the Corolla Cross version, but who knows.

The current Corolla Cross received minor updates for the 2026 model year, but none that significantly enhanced its overall design. And it still looks like a breadbox.

Competition will be tough, and by 2028 there will be a new Honda HR-V and Hyundai Kona. Both will probably offer a Hybrid as well.

  1. I’ll be interested to see whether Toyota shoots itself in the foot AGAIN.
The Lexus ES has broadened its audience but lost the luxury script – with a heavy price hike.
Toyota spent too much on too many EVs.
They cancelled the Highlander in favor of the Grand Highlander and a Highlander EV (now delayed), only to realize more people wanted the Highlander hybrid instead.
The Camry is just a hybrid refresh with an updated face – and I never see them on the road now.
The Crown sedan is a failure.
The RAV4 doesn’t seem to be able to get produced – I’ve seen a total of two on the road – probably because Toyota has overreached, made it hybrid only, and driven the price up.
NOW, the Corolla… so far looking overstyled, it’ll have a new engine and possibly an EV, and is likely to also get price marked way up for all that new tech it’ll carry – exactly what Corolla fans DONT WANT.
And they can’t seem to sell the Corolla Cross hybrid.
So – I’d say Toyota is in worse condition than most realize.
