The Lincoln Continental Deserves a Proper Comeback.

Lincoln has not sold a sedan in years. At least in North America. (They still have one in China). The last Town Car died in 2011, and the last-generation Continental was, unfortunately, not really up to what a Continental should be. It was laid to rest back in 2020. Lincoln will soon be able to use Ford’s new Universal EV Platform, and a new Continental would be a great addition to its current lineup of SUV-only boxes.

A true Continental should be a big car. It should even be bigger than a Mercedes S-Class. For less. Ford CEO Jim Farley actually mentioned the possibility of using the new “low-cost” platform they are working on for a new Lincoln model.

“I don’t think we want to make an affordable hybrid as a Lincoln, but an affordable EV Lincoln, with over-the-top color choice and over-the-top interior customization would make sense”.

“Affordable” and “over the top customization” don’t sound like two things that go together, but what do I know… At least, it seems Mr.Farley is actually thinking about Lincoln. Which would be great news.

In more recent generations, the Continental had become Lincoln’s smaller sedan, sold alongside the more traditional Town Car. Many were V6 FWD and based on the same platform as the Ford Taurus. In my opinion, the great Jack Telnack-designed 8th generation looked very upscale and in line with a proper Lincoln. The next generation tried hard to look more modern and almost like a 4-door Mark VIII. By that time, the Continental was losing steam as the Town Car had become much more popular.

A return of a proper American luxury sedan would be something to celebrate. Something that isn’t afraid of chrome and wood inside.

Let’s go!

  1. That looks absolutely sharp!

I think the US luxury brands (Lincoln and Cadillac) need to revert back to what they used to be; ultimate comfort cruisers with unapologetically American luxury designs.
