Cadillac Needs to Bring Back the DeVille.

Cadillac is now offering almost only SUVs. Its last sedan is the CT5, a pretty nice car. But one that is really too small and not really as quiet and roomy as you’d expect from a proper Cadillac sedan. What the GM luxury brand really needs is a new DeVille sedan.

At various times in its long history, the Cadillac DeVille series was available as a 4-door sedan, a 2-door coupe, and even a 2-door convertible. Through many generations, the sedan was produced from 1949 to 2006. The 2-door coupe was dropped by 1993. Up to 1977, the 2-door Coupe DeVille was often more popular than the sedan. Something hard to imagine these days, when 2-door cars are very rare in general. These large sedans were always pretty popular for Cadillac, with over 100,000 units sold most years. Of course, sales started going down in the early 2000s. And while the CT6 was a better car than the DeVille ever was, sales numbers never went over 10,542 units back in 2017.

Of course, large luxury sedans are far from being the most popular things these days. But it seems Cadillac will try again soon, with a second generation CT5. I test-drove a few CT5s over the past few years, and they are just not roomy enough. They are also not smooth and quiet enough. These just try too hard to appeal to BMW drivers, for some odd reason. These days, it seems the Escalade is the most luxurious Cadillac you can buy. Which, no matter what, is still an overpriced version of the Chevrolet Tahoe. Which is still a truck, and far from what a luxury car should be.

The illustrations above show what a new DeVille sedan could look like. Something that would obviously not be that popular these days. Although who knows. I’ve seen weirdest things happen.

The name DeVille is also not well known to current car buyers. But retro does sell. Old names like Integra, Prelude, and others are back.

I say, why not!

  1. As a Cadillac fan for 60 years, despite my grandmother backing over my tricycle with her new ’64, I could not agree more. They need something truly comfortable, roomy, & stylish that doesn’t require climbing up into or down from, with a name that doesn’t remind us older people of our pharmaceuticals. I just bought a 2023 XT6 for my knees, and it rides smoother overall than my DTS Platinum, but it still feels a bit like driving a bus.

The Sedan de Ville began in ’56 (first GM 4 door hardtops), the Coupe de Ville in ’49.

  2. As a 76 year old geezer, just the name “de Ville” brings back memories of the gorgeous, long, elegant lines of that marque in the 60’s. My dream Caddy is the ’65 Coupe de Ville in white over white. Understated, long lines, minimal chrome -the undisputed queen of the American road. When (not if) I hit the lottery I will find one and build my mansion around it. Perhaps the younger generations demand SUV’s and BMW clones but the Cadillac heritage should include a modern de Ville.

  3. I hope they bring it back, then maybe there is hope for all the other old-school’s. Fleetwood, Sedan Deville, Coupe Deville, Eldorado Biarritz. But I’d like them to bring them back in there true elegance of big body luxury rides.

  4. I owned a Coupe De Ville back in the early 90s, I was 32 when I got it, and that was the most incredible car ever! Now I have a 2017 XTS Sedan and I wish Cadillac would bring back the large flagship luxury sedan.

  5. Yes! Please bring back the large flagship luxury sedan again. I own a 2017 XTS and would love to buy another Cadillac, but there to small.

  6. Please, please bring back the DeVille. I want luxury!!!! I currently have a 2018 XTS. I love it! I don’t want a small car. Would love a V-8 engine too.
