VW Golf GTE

Last Updated:

The new GTE is the Plug-in version of the Golf.

It is powered by a combination of a 1.4 Liter engine with 148HP and an electric motor with 101HP.
It can do about 30 miles on electric alone and is fully charged in 3hrs through a regular outlet.
(That all sounds ver close to the new Audi A3 E-Tron)

The 1.4 Liter Turbo seems to be the same as the one used in the Jetta Hybrid. Where it is super smooth a quiet.
A much nicer engine than the one used in the Chevrolet Volt.

So this could really be quite a competition for the Volt.

No idea when this is going on sale, or even if it will make it here to the US. But it probably will, since we are already getting the A3 E-tron.

  1. I just realized…..leaving out the A3 Hatch in the US meas more Golf sales….not that they needed help.

  2. Hmmmm…this actually looks pretty intriguing (to me).
I've never understood these plug-in hybrids and this supposed "30 miles +/- on electric alone." Is that dependent on speed? If so how does that effect it?
My commute to work is 6 miles each way. About half of that is at 60 mph (or higher). This car would make sense if I could go two days on a charge without using the gas engine…but is that how it works???????

  3. I will never figure out the electric hype. I just leased a 2015 Golf for less than a Versa (with more equipment than a Versa too). These cars are "niche" cars that bring attention to the brand. With a Golf being cheaper now than a 2009 model it's a no brainer that the electric sell is only a marketing ploy.

  4. To be technical, the eGolf is the plug-in version of the Golf.. and the GTE is the plug-in Hybrid version of the GTI.

  5. Does someone know if this Golf will be a five seaters or a four like the Volt. I wished I could consider a Volt but with the 4 seats, it was not convenient for my usage.

  6. Golf is supposed to have the same back seat. So 5 passengers. Although with any car of that size, it's always "5 in a pinch"…

  7. The new golf is hot. So clean and sleek. Very nice job evolving a great car. Now about that built in Mexico thing…..
