2008 Scion xB

Last Updated:

Well… Not quite yet.
This is a test mule where they use toe current body on the new frame.
But, as you can tell, it is quite a bit longer than the current car.

It looks like the next US xB will even roomier.

  1. i will say it again: a piece of crap is still a piece of crap. even if you stretch it.

if you want something hip and cool, get a malibu maxx. it is roomier than this monster.
    and more reliable.

  2. Douchebag you are a complete f*ckin idiot! Get your head out of your *ss!!! I rented a Malibu Maxx last summer. It’s a decent car, that’s it. Even though I find Toyotas very boring they are WORLDS ahead of GM in design and quality.

  3. I guess if you don’t have the time to pickup sheetmetal, plywood, and a Briggs& Straton engine at Home Depot to build your own car; this will give you that instant “home-made” look and feel. It may be uglier and less fuel-efficint than the AMF Club Car golf cart, but it holds an extra set of clubs, and has “roll-em-up” windows! (How much are the lawn mower deck and snow blower attachments?)

  4. I got a chance to drive my nephew’s 2006 Scion xB last week. I was absolutely blown away by the way it drove and the features you get for the price. I drive a Cadillac Escalade ESV, so I am used to a completely different type of vehicle, but that Scion was a lot of fun to drive. The Scion didn’t have the brute power, but the manual transmission was slick and a joy to operate. It is a fantastic vehicle, especially for the younger crowd. I would imagine this new model will only improve on an already great product.

  5. Wow its really fun and easy to dump on this douchebag guy. You cant even say his name without calling him an insulting name.

  6. one more thing:
you won’t look like a fag driving the malibu maxx.

and that’s a big selling point. chevy knows it well

  7. id rather be a fag than a total moron that you are douchefag boy ! now go back to your garage and beat your guitar, and jack off to all the nasty scary ugly ass women that put pics on your blog !

  8. Box It UP!!!! Toyota thinks that they cannot go wrong and that your an idiot. Prove them wrong, stop being SHEEP! Do not follow Toyota! I repeat, break the brainwash cycle, there are much better cars out there for the money!

  9. You can’t deny the facts…Toyota is WAY BETTER than GM. GM is a dismal old company full of rich executives that try only to fill their pockets with more cash. Toyota at least tries to put out a quality built, reliable car. When I see your Malibu Maxx broken down along side the interstate I’ll beep twice. honk(f*ck) honk(you)

  10. a friend of mine wants a xb, so i told him id look for a slightly used one and see if he could save some bux, well I went to autotrader.com and could not get over how many salvage title xb’s there where. you see this car has no rear at all and just a light tap on the rear end destroys both rear quater panels, rear windows, roof and unibody, so i wouldnt be surprised if the insurance rate on this car goes thru the roof, so i refuse to lets any friends buy one now , and hes looking at a element instead…

  11. I didn’t think it was possible to make the xB even uglier than it already is. Gotta hand it to Toyota.

  12. On the Toyota vs. GM thing: they have both built plain vanilla, boring vehicles, mass-produced for schlubs; but Toyota has always been more reliable and in the last decade have upsized to the point where the Camry isn’t just significant competition for Chevys, it’s the standard barrier. Just like it took Toyota a long time to beat Chevy in perceived quality/value, it’s going to take a long time for Chevy to recover.

Personally, I’d rather have a Malibu on a European chassis (it’s more European than Detroit) because, for example, the 4 cylinder Malibu with good tires outhandles a 4 cylinder Camry – and costs less. The V6 is cheaper than the Camry V6, and although it is a pushrod design, has a lot of spunk and good gas mileage.

But wait, we are talking about the Scion xB. I almost got one in 2003, but my wife made be get an xA (couldn’t understand the “looks” of the xB). After having an xA, I realized 1.5 liters with barely any trunk isn’t enough to compensate for the Lexus-like build and “appointments” of the xA.

SO I am more than happy to see the xB “grow”. It can really use a trunk; the back seat is fine as-is. I can only hope they widen the track a little, it is a little on the narrow side, and of course drop in their great 1.8 engine – which although it has a lot more power, gets the same or better gas mileage.

Yes, the people at scionlife.com who have “bought into” the original xB decry the heresy of making the xB larger – but in a way, all Toyota is doing is “supersizing” the little milkwagon to match the “supersize” of current Americans, vs. the Japanese drivers on Japanese roads that this vehicle was designed for.

If that means the new xB is like a “squared” matrix, I can live with that! “Squaring” an econobox (putting the “box” back into econobox) makes SUCH an efficient vehicle.

Build one, and I’ll try once again to convince my wife that this is a GREAT form factor.

I disagree. I sold a Toyota Echo to my mom – similar unibody – and someone “T-eed” her in an intersection crash – smashed into her right front corner. Damages were about $5,000, but the insurance company fixed it, because the car held its value so well it was hard to total.

In think xB’s hold their value well. But while Echos are driven by silver haired grandparents in a cautious manner, 90% of the xB’s I see are driven by 20 somethings with extreme wheels and extreme attitude to match – fast, aggressive, and in and out of traffic. Not to stereotype, but if you throw in alcohol or drugs and late night parties, I can see a serious accident totalling the car, hence the many salvage titles you are seeing.

In short, blame the drivers, not the car.

  14. I thought I was buying an Xb, but it turned out to be just the crate that my PT Cruiser came in. Thanks for the Turbo, Chrysler!

  15. TO MARKWEB: You said;”but the insurance company fixed it, because the car held its value so well it was hard to total.” GUESS AGAIN! If a car with $5k damages is still worth $6k, they won’t total it unless you complain LOUDLY!!! Since you really thought the resale value was so great on a Scion, I’m thinking I could make a lot of money insuring your next car. Interrested?

  16. we all hate douchbag. he will go away if no one responds in any way…. do it, get rid of him/her forever

  17. The other reason you see a lot of Scions (Xb & etc) totaled as scrap, is that a lot of these accidents result in deaths. When an owner is killed in a car (all too frequent in these little cars) then they obviously aren’t around to argue against the insurance company that wants to write the car off quickly. This is also the case with Scion owners that are permanently disabled (or brain-damaged) as the result of a minor accident. People in bigger cars ( 300c, Crown Vic, LeSabre, Magnum etc) and especially those in SUVs ( Durango, Commander, Explorer, Navigator, Tahoe, etc) are much more likely to “walk away” and therefore have some say in what happens to the damaged vehicle.

  18. Yes, actually Toyota and their major decontenting can arguably be considered in my opinion, as very unsafe in general . The New Yars or Yarise, whatever they call it has about 4 inches from the front wheel to the front of the car….Ouch!!! and good luck to those in one!

  19. Gm and Toyota, one in the same? I know, they have been making cars together since 2 generations ago of the corolla. Sold in Canada as the chevy Nova. Here’s how the brainwashing works, The Corolla version of the NUMMI joint venture(that’s what it was called) was rated high in the consumer reports. The sister GM nova was rated much worse than average??????? It’s working, people ASSume that if it says TOYOTA it’s good. Wow! The public really do what they are told. Grow up, stop being sheep! No Toyota employee responses please, You people cannot be saved!

As a matter of fact, a fire-fighter that I know has stated that every xB accident that he has seen (weather it be a call or in a trade mag) has always ended with the entire passenger compartment in tact and no serious crumpling or damage to the floorboards or roof, which is a much better outcome than can be said for most high priced vehicles out there. The xB has a 4 star frontal crash test rating. And I have known people that have been t-boned at speed in excess of 45 mph and have walked awy with no injuries. This being said, I think i will keep feeling very safe in my $15,000 car that comes standard with traction control, and vehicle stability control.

  21. I was in my first accident ever this morning in my 06 XB. I was rear ended on the highway, and then was hit the driver in front of me. I’m not sure how fast the driver behind me was going, or how fast I was going since it all happend so fast, but I don’t think the driver was going more then 30mph. My car looks so sad. It would not start after being hit, so anyone who was on I94-South this morning… sorry. I had fluids leaking from the front, my front end looks destroyed, the engine looks like it is bent, all the doors are bent and either hard or impossible to open and/or close. The tow truck driver spoke about her in past tense. He asked me what year was it. 🙁 The worst part of it was, the car in front of me, a toyota highlander barely looked scratched, and the car behind me a nissan quest did not sustain much damage. I think Xb may stand for eXplodes when Bumbed.
