Volvo C30 in the real world

Last Updated:

I guess it’ll all depend on how much it goes for…

It does look pretty nice, but reliability might still be a big problem.
Anyone knows if the S40 series have been good cars so far?
I know the S60 has had quite a few problems, with a really bad resale value.

  1. i think it is good looking, but not sure about the rest out of volvo’s car the s60 had the highest resale value other than the newcomers, the s80 was awful in general, the s60 was poor by comparison to the cars in its class with higher residual values, but not bad, just average. in my opinion though the s60 was the best thing volvo had, very nice interior nice styling good size.

  2. 2005 s40 t5 manual gear box. 21 kmiles no rattles, no repairs. 30 mpg. love it but c30 styling is far better.

  3. I have an 05 S40T5 with the appearance package. 24k on the odo. It has been virtually bulletproof with no problems except for the integrated stereo that behaved oddly once when I first bought it. Thankfully, it wasn’t a recurring event. I am in love with this car and I still think it looks better than just about any other sedan when I approach it in a parking lot. My only real gripe is that it’s impossible to incorporate my Ipod into the flat panel stereo system. The new ones have Aux-in jacks so I’m trying to find someone who can retro fit that function into mine. One close friend bought an S40 and another has a C70 on order. The C30 is cool, but I’m really anxious to see the new S60R!

  4. A friend had a Volvo S60 for 4 years on a lease and it was a good car. It had a “light turbo” and was plenty fast and comfortable. There were only a few repairs needed in about 40,000 miles.

But I think he paid about $33K for the Volvo S60 which is $10+K more than what I paid for an new Honda Accord EX-L 3 years ago.

The Accord is as good or better in just about every respect, and the Volvo just isn’t worth the extra 10 grand.

  5. Given the platform it rides on is pretty well established at this point, as well as the S40 preceding it to market…I would imagine it’s the most trouble free Volvo to be introduced in years.

I think it looks GREAT too. I guess if it doesn’t hold it’s resale value, that’s good for those of us who can find great deals on used car lots!

  6. That’s all good to hear.

I think the S40 has more competition in the market place than the C30 will have.
So it might do pretty well.
Should be quite a bit cheaper too.

They already have a mini site for it on the US site and they are pushing the “cool” aspect of the car.
    Kind of like the Mini…

  7. iQuack…

The S40 is the anti-Accord. Not to have to look at an Accord in my driveway makes an extra 10k for the S40 a bargain… and the premium paid means that they aren’t as common as the Accord. The Accord is a very good car, but this generation is very frumpy.

  8. Volvo is learning reliability/durability from Ford. Need I say more? Ford/UAW trash everything they touch in an attempt to yank higher profits.

Maybe Toyota will buy Volvo when Ford goes chapter 11. I will consider purchasing the C30 then.

  9. I really like this car. My only complaint would be the front. We have seen that Volvo front now for what, 5 or 6 years, time to tweek it a bit.

  10. never understood the point of feeling so passionate about hating american car companies, comeone their just cars lol, for the sake of the company im confused as to why there are so many people that want to see the american companies fold….but on the subject at hand this c30 is pretty nice a good looking hatch inside and out, im sure it will have a good price probably not that much direct competition either, but ford is the reason volvos, jags, and land rover has improved their reliability, i think ford biggest problem is being so conservative with the brands styling especially jaguar, but again good looking car

  11. From Anonymous above: “The S40 is the anti-Accord. Not to have to look at an Accord in my driveway makes an extra 10k…..”

Well, believe that if you choose, but the S40 is smaller than the S60 with which I compared the current Accord above.

The new S40 is a good car, but it’s no thing of great beauty IMO–certainly not as good-looking as the S60 which is among the best styled mid-sized sedans. But the S60’s racy roof limits rear seat head room, so the Accord is a better choice for people who want a back seat for adults.

With respect to the S40, I don’t think it’s much, if any, better than the similar Mazda 3.

In any case, I’d take the Accord over any of them (and I did!).

  12. I thought pricing already came out for this. It’s not going to be cheap, nor was it meant to be an entry-level model. It was designed for mature (ie. rich) Volvo loyalists with an “active, sporty” lifestyle. As I recall, it was priced similarly to mid-level S60.

  13. Pricing has not been announced yet. At least for the US.

But they are talking about “around” $23000 to start with a Turbo model starting at “around” $25000.

  14. A friend of mine has an S40… it is a nice car for short, very small people and is based primarily on the Ford Escort. I rented an S40 in Europe prior to The U.S. debut. Over ther it is as common as a Taurus. I am not a giant but the current S40 has too small an interior.
Hey Vince how about the new 08 Accord?

  15. ” it is a nice car for short, very small people and is based primarily on the Ford Escort. I rented an S40 in Europe prior to The U.S. debut. Over ther it is as common as a Taurus. I am not a giant but the current S40 has too small an interior.”

Nonsense. I am 6’1″ and fit in an S40 fine. It’s proportionate to a 3-series or A4 and is in no way based on the Escort, which ended production several years before the production of S40s begun. The current S40 is first implementation of the Volvo designed C1 platform. The successful Mazda 3, European Focus, C-Max and C70 followed using derivatives of the same C1 platform. As for it being common in Europe… So what? So are MBs, BMWs and Audis. Please check your mis-information and your spelling.
