2008 Ford Taurus????

Last Updated:

Ford is supposed to announce the news tomorrow in Chicago.
The revised Ford 500 will be renamed Taurus.

That is one weird and amazing move.
I guess it is better than sticking with a mistake and not admitting they were wrong in the 1st place.
But changing a car’s name in the middle of the cycle is still strange.
And the car isn’t that different from last year.
And I’m not even sure the Taurus name is that great anymore. To most people, it just means “cheap rental”.

I guess they can get away with it by advertising the hell out of it. Most people out there have never heard of the 500 anyway.
They might think, “hey, I didn’t know there was a new Taurus!”

What do I know. It might work after all…

  1. ford needs more designers, engineers, people with vision and less marketers, accountants and lawyers

  2. OMG…i have always been a Ford man but i have just lost all hope. They are bringing back the Taurus name on the lamely redesigned 500. What the hell are they thinking? Bankruptcy may just save the Ford name from further disgrace…Wow Ford whats next bringing back the Pinto?

  3. I wonder if they are going to use the “500” name for the rear wheel drive sedan when it comes out.

  4. i think this is a good move, no one has heard of the five hundred anyway… but most people know what a taurus is.

  5. Slapping the Taurus name on what had been called the 500 won’t make that dull-looking thing any better.
But I think it was megastupid to throw away the Taurus name which Ford spent millions promoting.
The Taurus was one of Ford’s greatest successes, and while not a great car, it was a generally decent car with a name worth retaining.
    Smart move, IMO.

  6. I dont think it is going to happen, unless they plan on changing the way Ford markets their products.

All Ford cars begin with ‘F,’except the Crown Vic, which plans to be dropped in a couple of years. All Ford SUV’s begin with ‘E,’ all Lincoln products are starting to favor names which begin with ‘M.’ And all Mercury products begin with ‘M’ except for the Grand Marquis, which will also be dropped in a couple of years.

So thats how the Ford Name Marketing strategy works, IMO.

  8. As posted above-this is retarded.
It goes against Ford’s marketing and shows again they have no idea wht they’re doing. This tells me their three-bar grille design is another fad that will be dropped after next year and we’ll get something different again!
I’ll stick with DaimlerChrysler, though their products are starting to fall into a similar cycle (Durango/Ram/Dakota/LX facelifts).

    ………..
They have done worse can you say Zephyr ?????
I also heard there gonna rename the new facelifted focus to Escort.
    (sarcasm)

  10. How to make an ugly car even more ugly? Ask Ford. How to embarrass youselves again with a dead man’s name? Ask Ford. How to find an exit strategies? Even Bush finds a better answer.

  11. Ford Ford Ford.

They kill so many of their great products (90’s T-bird, Probe, Escort, Contour, etc) that came out of the gate STRONG, and then they failed to follow-up and improve them.

Do they realize that the Accord, Camry…they both started years ago, and have built a reputation for improvement and brand loyalty?

Dumb dumb dumb. Who cares if they bring Taurus back now? It’s name is garbage.

  12. Why does Ford keep doing this? They launch crap and they think that it sucks because of the name?

You just wait and see… I’ve associatted the “Malibu” with lame sedans for my entire 36 years. But it will take just one, hopefully the latest one, to make the Malibu name sound more appealing. Ford can play with nomenclature all they want. It’s not the name that will pick up Ford out of the muck, it’s the product.

  13. Why didnt Ford name this the Fuarus… Marketing people are borderline retarded goofs. MBA=More Bad Advertizing

  14. Boring name for a boring car. What else can you expect from Ford? They might be better off retiring both the name and the car….

  15. HEY FORD WAKE UP AND TAKE HEED! TORINO or GALAXY would be more revered and respected than the feeble Taurus nameplate!!!!!!!

  16. I don’t think the 500 is really that bad looking a car. It was a bit of a conservative over-reaction to the pointlessly way-out looks of the next-to-last Taurus though. I think the 85 style Taurus was the only mid-sizer that Ford have done well since the 60s.

  17. incredible. this is the third time a comment of mine hasn’t been posted. GOOD JOB CAPTAIN CENSORSHIP!!
