Challenger price is actually over $40 000.

Apparently, the gas-guzzler tax will be $2100 on the 1st year SRT8 model.
So this will actually push the base price at a bit over $40 000.

Nice…

  1. What’s that, 30.000 euro? For that money we get a midrange Passat diesel and you get serious muscle, so why complaining?

  2. I paid gas guzzler tax for my Audi with a 340hp 4.2 V8. That makes the Charger look like a bargain. What’s with people wanting everything for free? $40k is nothing these days.

  3. I hope the G8 does’nt have the same problem. I have a feeling that’s one of the reasons it’s base price is so low. That price may be before the gas guzzler tax is applied. Then again I could be wrong.

  4. This silly POS will be a flat failure.

Yeah, a few guys who liked the original and quite undistinguished Challenger of the ’70s (a late and weak answer to the Mustang and Camaro) will buy this thing. The rest of us will ignore it. It’s too big, too heavy, too expensive, and has limited appeal.

If you MUST buy one of these losers, wait a few months after the introduction because they’ll eventually languish on dealers’ lots and the price will fall like a bag of rocks to clear them out.

Just like the 300C, which is still selling like crazy? This will sell fine. Chrysler runs into problems when they try to slip one over on their customers. If this is a good car, it’ll sell well. If they have cheaped-out, like with the Nitro, the Sebring, the Avenger, etc, then it’ll flop. Too much is riding on this car, so hopefully they’ve learned.

  6. This is a picture of the concept. Not the old one.

As far as the 300, a 4 door sedan with V6 and V8 options will have a far longer lasting appeal than a $40 000 retro muscle car that could average 15MPG when gas prices are close to $4 a gallon.

I don’t think you can compare the two.

  7. The gas guzzler tax is pure BS, plain and simple. Just another underhanded way for the government to separate us from our hard-earned money.

Agreed, however this is why I think it’s smart to start with the highest-end vehicle first. When the demand is strong, it will sell great no matter the price. As the demand wanes and most everyone who wants the SRT8 has bought one, the smaller engines will come out and appeal to those who couldn’t swing the expensive version. There is a market for pricy coupes, as we see with the G Coupe, the 335 coupe, the A5, the Z and all the epensive iterations of the Mustang. Hopefully they don’t botch it.

  9. I agree. Compared to the pricey Germans or optioned-out Japanese cars, this one will be considered a bargain.

    Dammit.

I want one so badly I know how it tastes, and it doesn’t make sense.

    But I still want it.

I’m sure there are support groups for this.
