Chubby Nerd drives the new Smart

Last Updated:

I must say. He is a “lucky bastard”.
And looking cooler and cooler with sunglasses. (Although still very far bellow the coolness of the Burlapp)

I sat in a few Smarts at the Auto Show and I was pretty disappointed.
Everything felt pretty cheap to me. Plasticky doors, pretty crude finish. And no iPod plugs.
A big mistake in this “I want to be cool ” car.

I guess they will sell to everyone who wants one. But I can’t imagine that number being very high.

  1. I don’t know, it seems like a nifty little car, but unless you live in the middle of a huge city, and never venture out on the interstate, there’s not much need for this thing. Maybe if it got some insane high gas mileage, but it’s not really better than the Fit or Versa at the pump (which cost about the same as the Smart, and are waaaaaaay more refined).

  2. First, just add big black round ears to Mr. Mayes
    and you got Mickey Mouse.

Second, I drove that car in black when Smart
had its state wide tour and let me tell you, the drive
felt like I was in a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang mobile…in
    other words, another Disney product.

The Mini is so much more refined and I am ashamed
to think that Smart is a Mercedes product. It is also
really ugly inside. Leave it for the meter-maids or
rich to collect their golf balls

  4. The only thing this car got is a ‘cool’ factor but i imagine it will fade over time just like the beetle and the mini.

as far as mpg goes, i was disappointed to hear it only gets 33/40 city/hwy for such a small car plus premium fuel to boot. i think practicality calls for a prius in my book 🙁

  5. Geez, only 33-40 mpg?? Which means in real world driving, you probably get between 28-35. That’s not that great for such an impractical econobox (plus premium fuel!!!).

If I were still in my 20s, I would have probably put my name down for one .. but now I am in my 40s, I know how hard I’ve worked for a dollar, so would not be considering this vehicle. I save my money for a Miata.

  6. I drove on for 2 weeks in Europe, and around the cities it was great. On the highways, well, make sure you have a will. It is definitely basic, millage was better than estimates. They have stop taking orders for them in the US, all 30K have been sold.
