  1. So….the “Genesis” name is offical?

So….I had to have the video game system back in 92….now I have to have the car.

  2. Someone I work with has a new Lexus LS series and it is a stunningly beautiful car. This pic of the Genesis looks like it will have the same appealling lines and stance as the Lexus. Hyundai may have quite a time convincing the naysayers to try the brand but when this car his the streets it may sell itself on looks alone.
I feel pretty certain that the Genesis name and badge will probably make it to the states…there’s been so much publicity using that name and it sounds like Hyundai has just about overcome any legal hurtles. Should be an interesting Spring at the Hyundai showrooms with the arrival of the Elantra Touring and Genesis.

  3. They really need to work on that grill. It doesn’t flow at all with the rest of the car. Kinda reminds me of how the Lincoln lines are ruining their designs with their god-awful grilles.

  4. It’s really kind of disturbing and sad how proud they are of this car. I hope this does well. I just don’t see how it possibly could.

  5. It’s really kind of disturbing and sad how proud they are of this car. I hope this does well. I just don’t see how it possibly could.

People said similar things about the first Acura and Lexus.

  6. Why is it “disturbing” that they are so proud?

Was it disturbing when Toyota was proud of the Prius, or Cadillac of the Escalade?

These vehicles broke new ground for their respective marques, being the first foray into otherwise unknown territory. Neither the Escalade nor Prius were exceptionally attractive upon release, yet one generations later, these cars have proved to be wildly succesful.

The Genesis is Hyundai’s first attempt at near-luxury, hopefully, will be the first step to building something greater.

  7. “People said similar things about the first Acura and Lexus.”

Hyundai is not equal to Toyota or Honda. Far from it. Toyota and Honda were built on a reputation of quality. Hyundai was built on a reputation of being cheap and disposable. In spite of their sudden Mc-rise in some quality rankings, Hyundais are still mostly for people who are one paycheck away from living in a cardboard refrigerator box on the sidewalk. These will be sold to poseurs who probably cant really afford it.

Aside from Douchbag Jones’ comments, this is one of the most arrogant and ignorant comments I have ever read on this site. You don’t know much about economics do you?

    Educate yourself.

    MR

  9. “You don’t know much about economics do you?”

Maybe I was a bit snarkey, but your comment doesn’t even make any sense. The truth hurts sometimes. The reality is that Hyundai, and its sister brand Kia, are among the worst brands on the market today. In spite of their sudden rise in public perception, they’re trying to move upscale too quickly.

  10. …”Toyota and Honda were built on a reputation of quality”…

Well, first I smell a big ol’ TROLL, but second, someone hasn’t been around long enough to recall when Toyota and Honda first came to the States with cheap models first. There were no Accord’s or Camry’s from the git-go, and both these makes came with no reputation except that anything manufactured in Japan at that time was suspect in quality and materials. It took many years of U.S. sales in the U.S. for both to gain the reputation they now have. I daresay that the Japanese reputation then was as bad or worse than China’s current reputation.
As far as the other remark that Hyundai is a vehicle for the “underclass” (my quotes) only the Accent, 4cyl Tiburon and Elantra come in under $20K, and a loaded Veracruz pushes $38K. Not only that but their minivan is rated by many as “Best In Class” and even the snobbiest have admitted that it is a fools money that buys a Lexus over a Veracruz or a Camry over a Sonata.

Oh well, there will always be the ignorant bigots and haters among us, unwilling to admit that when times and facts change, minds should too.

  11. ^ Amen.

I remember when I had to correct all of my friends in 2003 that my 1988 Mazda 929 WASN’T a Lexus….believe it or not….they all seriously thought I debadged my car, stole badges off of a 626, and turned the numbers upside down so my car wouldn’t get stolen.

Mazda will never surprise the world like that again (or at least the US anyway), now that they have found a different niche to hold on to.

Seriously, Hyundai has become what Mazda wanted in the late 80’s early to mid 90’s and I am damn proud. The thing that made them more successful is the fact that instead of trying to build a brand new marque for themselves, they are doing it from the inside out. Hyundai will literally turn itself into it’s own luxury brand and they have the mainstream support of Kia….

I’m sure everyone is aware of the Lexus ES 250, Infinity M30, and Acura Legend…..Hyundai has taken it from a different direction, learning from ALL the past mistakes of other manufactuerers. They sat….lurking in the background for an entire decade as other were already full in flight….and now they are ready to strike.

You think the Veracruz/RX commercials are interesting….just wait until the Genesis/LS commercials….Toyota is in for a hurtin’

  12. It took the Japanese twenty five years of building great cars before they could launch a luxury brand. Hyundai still hasn’t built a solidly decent car. Lately they’ve managed to build cars that don’t completely fall apart after three years. Time will tell.

“As far as the other remark that Hyundai is a vehicle for the “underclass” (my quotes) only the Accent, 4cyl Tiburon and Elantra come in under $20K, and a loaded Veracruz pushes $38K.”

The Veracruz is for those who want people to think they’re driving a Lexus. Hyundai designed it for exactly that purpose. It’s weak and lame for Hyundai to leverage the brand equity of a luxury brand by mimicking their style, and it’s pathetic that people to buy into it.

“Not only that but their minivan is rated by many as “Best In Class” “

Okay +1 for Hyundai by some publications. Now that Toyota is understandably the punching bag for many consumer publications, someone has to be the teacher’s pet. Let the pro-Hyundai hyperbole fly!

“and even the snobbiest have admitted that it is a fools money that buys a Lexus over a Veracruz or a Camry over a Sonata.”

Not really. People just don’t want to deflate your ego because you got a faux Lexus and are stuck with it for 60 months. The Sonata impresses people by virtue of the fact that it doesn’t suck as badly as the last one. That it might be mentioned in the same breath as the Camry isn’t all that impressive. The current Camry stinks too. They’re both the darlings of rental lots now.

“Oh well, there will always be the ignorant bigots and haters among us”

I’m not sure what that’s supposed to mean or how you determined this. I dislike Hyundai for very real reasons. They’ve proven to me to be total garbage-by-design. There are people who drove crappy Escorts in the 80s, sludged Toyotas in the 90s and ignition-coil failed Jettas in 04. Are they bigots because they verbally reflect their disgust? No. Face it, Hyundai needs more than two marginally decent vehicles to make up for all the total crap they put on the road for two decades.

  13. This car is a copy of a Lexus from the 1990s. The grille looks cheap and oddly pieced-together. It’ll sell well only because it’ll be low priced. Just like the Lexus LS did when it launched. The difference is, Toyota was a very well respected brand when they decided to start selling hi-end cars. Hyundai still really doesn’t have the design or quality there to compete for serious money yet.

  14. toyota and honda were considered disposable cheap “knock-offs” of american cars for quite some years. at that time if you use words like “performance” and “premium” or “luxury” and “japanese car” in the same sentence ppl will point at your face and laugh. but look where they are now decades later.

then koreans came along, studied and emulated the japanese’s strategy, and they are improving in every single aspect at a faster rate then the japanese did before. go look at those early hyundai model like the first gen excel/sonata, u will be amazed at how similar they look to japanese some japanese car at that time.

in a few year chinese will be doing the same, and expect them to do it at a even faster rate than the koreans.

  15. Its funny how emotionally charged people get when a company goes into new territory. Lexus sure was as the Toyota Crown was pretty bad for its time, much as the XG350 was regarded later. It was not even till the late 1990s that Acura put leather in their car that did not shred like cheap parchment after a few years.

  16. Hyundai is not equal to Toyota or Honda. Far from it.

You actually proved my point without realizing it. Thank you.

Again, Hyundai is trying to launch a premium automobile, and it is suffering many of the slings and arrows that Toyota and Honda did when they launched the Lexus and Acura brands respectively. I admire such pluck. Whether or not I like the brand isn’t an issue.

Maybe I was a bit snarkey

    It’s typically spelled “snarky.”

  17. The quality look goods so far and with Hyundai rising reliablity ratings, I think many will take the chance on a $35K Hyundai. Besides, they have the 10year/100K mile warranty for insurance. Now, in 3-4 years Hyundai needs a luxury brand to remove the “snob” factor, of closed mined shoppers.

  18. “Again, Hyundai is trying to launch a premium automobile, and it is suffering many of the slings and arrows that Toyota and Honda did when they launched the Lexus and Acura brands respectively.”

Honda still hasn’t gotten the formula right and Lexus, with the lame ES, is hit-or miss. The difference is, Toyota and Honda were well respected brands when they decided to launch a luxury car. Hyundai is not. Hyundai is still a car that sells on price alone.

    “It’s typically spelled “snarky.””

Glad you are familiar with the term. Because it’s what you’re going to get a lot of as you continue to suggest Hyundai compares to a Lexus. You probably think everyone is admiring your quartz knockoff “Rolex” timepiece also. The Genesis is no different than that.

  19. Honda still hasn’t gotten the formula right and Lexus, with the lame ES, is hit-or miss. The difference is, Toyota and Honda were well respected brands when they decided to launch a luxury car. Hyundai is not. Hyundai is still a car that sells on price alone.

You still don’t understand the point, but you’re very clear with your hatred of Hyundai. That’s fine. But thank you for pointing out (yet again) that Hyundai is suffering the same slings and arrows that the aforementioned makes suffered, too, when they launched premium automobiles.

Glad you are familiar with the term. Because it’s what you’re going to get a lot of as you continue to suggest Hyundai compares to a Lexus.

I never even suggested they were comparable cars.

You probably think everyone is admiring your quartz knockoff “Rolex” timepiece also. The Genesis is no different than that.

    I don’t own a knock off Rolex.

Anyway, I do admire an underdog like Hyundai that can feel confident in their product. The Genesis should be a decent car regardless of snotty remarks. They’ve come a long way, baby.
