All new BMW 5 series GT

Last Updated:

Basically a hatch version of the upcoming new 5 series.
I am not sure why they choose to do that. A wagon will still be available. And usually, a hatch design could look better, or sportier.

But not here…. At all…

  1. I’m sure the wagon will look far better than this horrific mess. Who asked for it? What trend makes this thing relevant?

  2. There’s no practical reason for that complicated, heavy hatch. I agree with the first post: it’s sad what has happened to BMW.

  3. This has proven to be the most aerodynamic shape for cars. Isn’t this the shape of the Prius and the old/new Insight? Isn’t the FCX Clarity this same shape. I have a feeling that we should all get used to this sporty hatch shape. It’s the future of automobile design.

  4. The picture with the bottom hatch open reminds me of a girl monkey “presenting” for a male suitor…….

  5. Not a big fan of hunchbacks; but I guess with Big Brother tightening the CAFE noose around automakes necks, BMW needs to be prepaired. BMW can’t design a regulation-compliant product nearly as fast as Congressmen can change their minds (and the regulations that they write into law).

    I love hatchbacks…
    I love fastbacks…
I love the SKODA SUPERB dual-back…
I like quite a bit about the Clarity…
I even liked the Thugota …in pix …at first
    but
    there’s practically NOTHING I like about post-bungle BMW’s
(altho, on-paper everything sounds right — it's like they take a great recipe but add his same-old-poo styling :-p & :barf:
    so
guess this thing being consistent is no surprise.

  7. is it me or does the dash “lean-toward-the-driver” not work very well in this application. Looks awkward

  8. I take it that by saying “but not here….at all…”, that it’s not cming here to the USA. That’s great news because to me, this THING is like a $70,000.00 Aztec. This THING is HIDEOUS. Even the X5 is hideous. That p.o.s. reminds me of a $70,000.00 Subaru Outback sedan. Again, I’m assuming this vehicle is’nt coming to the USA, but I gotta say, it’s because of hatchbacks like this that Americans don’t like hatchbacks. And for the record, I love hatchbacks.

  9. This vehicle’s purpose just does not make sense. What’s wrong with the wagon? The point of hatchback versions of sedan/wagons is to be sporty (Example: Mazda 6 and Ford Mondeo)…they can get away with this because it is executed well. I think the Skoda idea is a joke, but at least it looks better than this. The little hole that opens in the trunk area seems to be in the way if you actually want to put something in there…it looks like you’d have to crawl in…so I see only the hatch portion being used the most.

  10. dunno. the rear looks chopped off.

they shouldve rather created a sportier and more bold car.

i am thinking a CLS or Passat CC fighter based on the 5 series.

this is a wannabe soccer mom van.
