Carlos Tavares quits.

This is actually pretty shocking news since Carlos Tavares was supposed to stay at the head of Stellantis for another year. It will also affect many car brands around the world since Stellantis has no less than 14.

According the Reuters, the Stellantis board ”  including Chairman John Elkann, accepted the CEO’s resignation with immediate effect and that a new interim executive committee, chaired by Elkann, would be established.”

“Interim committee” never sounds like great news does it? It also doesn’t sound like a way to get a new vision for the company quickly.

We all knew Stellantis was in trouble running so many brands but it really seemed like Mr. Tavares was at least making an effort to keep all the brands alive. Which was good news. Even if Dodge and Chrysler had been left for dead by Sergio Marchionne.

A lack of new products and current ones getting too expensive is never a good way to make your dealers and consumers happy. And that has been a serious problem for Stellantis US brands especially.

Jeep was a cash cow a few years ago, they’ve been getting very expensive and sales have taken a hit. While Dodge and Chrysler had nothing new to offer for years. Except maybe the Dodge Hornet which is an Alfa Romeo clone and doesn’t seem to be fooling anyone. (Besides hurting the more expensive Alfa model as well).

At least Jeep has two new models coming out and more soon. I just saw the new Wagoneer EV in person at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and it is a very impressive SUV in the flesh with a fantastic interior. For now, only the top-of-the-line version is available but soon prices will trickle down with less expensive trims offered.

Same thing with the 2025 Dodge Charger. Another amazing-looking design in person. With cheaper models like a RWD version coming next year. As well as a 6-cylinder Turbo and a 4-door sedan.

Jeep’s new Recon is also around the corner, with a new Compass just a few months away and a new Renegade EV starting at around $25,000. All these have the potential to be quite popular. Jeep has even lowered prices on 2024 models.

Besides the new Charger, Dodge is also getting 2 new SUVs ready. One called Stealth and a larger one probably using the good old Durango name.

Even Chrysler is getting at least one new EV SUV and a new Pacific EV later.

I think things aren’t great at Stellantis but they will be getting better. Sooner than later. With or without Mr. Tavares.
