Tesla Model Y “L”.

Tesla has already published teasers of this new version of the Model Y last month. It is basically a larger model Y with 3 rows of seats. It is both a bit taller and longer than the regular Model Y. However, the new seating configuration only offers 6 seats, not 7. The 6th image from the top shows the small powered armrest in between the 2nd row seats.

From most angles, it looks exactly like the regular Tesla Model Y. At least on these photos, and it probably looks obviously larger in real life. The wheels are new, and that’s about it. The rear end has an additional spoiler. But the profile tells another story.

The new car is obviously quite longer to accommodate more seats. The roof line is obviously different, and the rear side window is much larger. The whole thing makes the Tesla Model Y look even more like a turtle than ever before.

The new trim is about 8,6 inches longer than the current 5-seater version. And wheelbase has been increased by almost 6 inches. It also looks like rear headroom has been increased with the new, longer roof design.

Offering a long wheelbase of a popular car has been something many other manufacturers have been doing for the Chinese market for many years. Tesla isn’t doing anything new here.

At least for the Chinese market, the electric motors produce a little bit more power on the new, larger, and probably heavier trim.

I guess this is one of these “new” models Elon Musk was promising before the end of the year. New trims of existing cars. And one that might even be only offered in China. As I’m not sure people would pay extra money for the ability to carry just one more passenger.

However, more cargo room could be attractive to many..

These cars are currently being delivered to Chinese dealers, and we should see an official announcement very soon.

As we all know, no new design from Tesla is coming anytime soon. All we’ll see for a while is this larger Model Y, followed by a cheaper, decontented Y later. And of course the Performance version of the revised Model Y. Otherwise, nothing actually looking new, for quite a while…

  1. Tesla used to be a leader in the electric car market and its leader was respected. Not so much anymore. This is hot garbage.
