The Japanese illustration on top shows what the production version of the 2023 Toyota EPU Pickup concept could look like.
The EPU was a compact electric pickup concept that actually looked very modern. That same year, Toyota unveiled the Land Cruiser SE concept (bottom image). The Land Cruiser SE is rumored to see production next year as one of 2 new Toyota large EV SUVs.
What is interesting is a new rumor of a Land Cruiser pickup. It seems Toyota has decided to create a whole family of vehicles under the Land Cruiser name. Almost like a sub-brand. You would think the common idea for all of these is to have the classic rugged outdoor look, like the Land Cruiser of the new Land Cruiser FJ compact. However, the Land Cruiser SE looks very clean and sleek. And almost doesn’t seem it should be called a “Land Cruiser” at all.
A new member of the family would be a brand-new pickup. The illustration above shows one that basically looks like the EPU concept. Which would now be part of the ever-expanding Land Cruiser family. It also seems this new Land Cruiser sub-brand might be a recent idea, and Toyota is looking for upcoming models to fit into the new family. With some of these, far less rugged-looking than others.
I guess why not? Car makers are always looking for ways to make more money, and the Land Cruiser name alone might allow Toyota to charge a bit more than if these were just sold as “regular” Toyotas…
