2nd generation Cadillac CT5 coming.

Cadillac will end production of the current CT4 and CT5 sedans after the 2026 model year. While the smaller CT4 will not make a comeback, GM is working on a next-generation CT5.

The new sedan will be based on the Alpha 2-2 platform. An updated version of the current platform. From my experience with the current CT5, I really hope Cadillac turns it into a “real” Cadillac. Something the current model is not. It is not a super comfortable car. Or a super quiet or smooth one. And not very roomy.

A longer wheelbase would do wonders for the next generation. And maybe also offer a trim that isn’t so sporty. I am pretty sure the V trim with its crazy V8 will return, since speed nerds will demand it. (but not necessarily actually buy it). The base 2.0 Liter Turbo should, however, be replaced by something quieter and more refined. Maybe a REV model, which would mostly be powered by an electric motor, would work? At least it could be more refined than a small gas engine.

Visually, a new generation should really find a more modern and striking design language. Something a bit more unique and impressive. The current crop of Cadillac SUVS is either overdone, like the Lyriq, or plain boring, like the Vistiq. Personality is key for a new Cadillac sedan. It really needs to stand out without being “Celestiq weird”.

Over the past year or so, there have also been rumors of 2 new fastback EV sedans coming from Cadillac. Let’s hope these are still in the cards. The EV powertrain, with its total silence and amazing power, is really better suited for a modern Cadillac. Although for those who really have zero way to plug an EV anywhere, REV could work. And still be much better than just a 2.0 Liter Turbo. Since GM doesn’t have a smooth V6 anymore.

Either way, it will be great to see a new Cadillac that isn’t an SUV…

  1. This is the right move. Cadillac shouldn’t be competing in the cut rate lease wars with the CT4. And for the love of god get rid of the 2.0T. No Cadillac should have a 4 cylinder engine. A hybrid V6 would be a great base motor, with the V8 for the V cars.
