Next Ford Fiesta to be built by Renault.

Ford and Renault just entered a partnership to build small EVs for the European market. There will be 2 new models for Ford, one probably being a new Fiesta EV.

Ford will have access to Renault’s Ampere EV platform. A platform currently used for the Renault 5 EV, the Nissan Micra EV, as well as the new Twingo EV. The platform also comes in larger sizes, used by the Renault Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Teck, and even the Nissan Ariya. That means plenty of room for a larger Ford model like a new Focus EV.

I am not sure where that leaves the partnership between VW and Ford. That deal produced the current European Ford Explorer EV and its “coupe” version, the new Ford Capri EV. As far as I know, these two have not been big hits for Ford so far, especially the Capri.

I guess the American company could be more successful in Europe by bringing back old classics like the Fiesta and Focus (Unless they revert to the old “Escort” name).

So far, the Renault 5 and new Nissan Micra do share a lot and look generally quite similar. It would be nice to see a more original new Fiesta. Or better yet, a retro design reminiscent of the very first generation, which was also sold in the US until 1981.

Of course, this new Renault-based Fiesta will never be sold in the US.

The image above shows the original, first-generation Ford Fiesta sold in Europe. With its original front-end design.

A year later, the Fiesta made it to the US. With a redesigned front end, round headlights, and much larger 5MPH bumpers.

  1. Great idea. Its about time Ford considered this. The idea of footing the cost of developing its own systems was just poor leadership and poor financial advisement. When you think about it, a larger development alliance between Ford, Nissan, Renault, Mitsubishi makes a ton of sense… as long is they don’t have Ford and Renault reliability issues. Quality aint Job1 at Ford.
