Ford’s new 2028 EV truck.

Just like a few months ago, Ford just had another presentation about their all-new Universal EV platform, without showing any product. We will have to wait even longer to see that new $30,000 electric pickup.
However, we now know the general silhouette of the truck, thanks to the image above. This definitely shows something that doesn’t look like a traditional pickup. Which is refreshing. As I mentioned a few months ago, it looks a lot like what Chinese car maker Changan has been doing with their Qiyuan E07.

Jim Farley still describes the new Ford truck as “a new silhouette”. And something that “isn’t a pickup”. Which seems like the exact description of the Changan truck. As you can see, it has a very clever glass hatch that opens up by sliding over the roof. Giving access to a very large and practical cargo area. Something like this would be much more functional than a typical pickup for most people. Since no cargo would be exposed, unless you transport very large and tall items.
Obviously, Ford wouldn’t be the first to produce such a shape, but it would have the possibility to make this new type of vehicle very popular in the US. Especially with a $30,000 starting price. Mr. Farley has already mentioned that the new truck would be roomier than a Toyota RAV4. Which starts at $32,000.
The new platform will also use far fewer parts than current Ford models, as well as a new 48volt architecture.
Mr.Farley is also very well aware of what’s going on in China. Especially since he drove a new Xiaomi sedan for a few months last year and claimed he had a hard time giving it up. He knows about the Changan truck and probably loves it. It is also a great way to make a pickup much more aerodynamic.
Of course, we have no actual image of the new truck and no specs about the battery, motors etc… Except that it will be available with 2 or 4 wheel drive.
With production starting in 2027 for a 2028 model year, you can bet there will be plenty more teasers, meetings, and various “events” regarding the new truck. Showing just a little bit more each time…
The video above explains what the new platform is all about. And it is quite amazing to see all these passionate people explain what they have been working on for a few years.
I cannot wait to see what Ford will be doing with the new platform and all the new models using it.
