New BMW i3 Wagon Will Be Better Looking Than the Sedan.

The all-new BMW i3 EV was introduced very recently, and there are already talks about a wagon version.  While the sedan is expected to make its way to North America, the future of the wagon remains pretty uncertain. Which will lead to many disappointed BMW fans in the US.

The three years since the BMW Vision Neue Klasse first appeared have not been kind to the i3 sedan. As the design of the production version shares very little with the original concept. What we see now feels like an attempt to graft a few Neue Klasse styling cues onto a shape that resembles an older BMW 3 Series, and not even the current one. The result is oddly familiar and very conservative, lacking the boldness many had hoped for. The design the feels stuck in an awkward middle ground. As if BMW hesitated at the last moment. But again, this is BMW after all, and we shouldn’t expect too much…

However the upcoming wagon could end up being the better-looking version. Without constant comparisons to the concept, and with more forgiving proportions, it may suit the Neue Klasse design language far more naturally. It could even prove more appealing than the very awkward-looking BMW iX3.

It seems BMW may have managed to please almost no one with the new i3. And they did the same thing with the iX3. And especially with the new ghastly X5.

Viewed in isolation, the car is not that horrible. The proportions are acceptable, and the silhouette is still recognizably BMW. I guess… The interior of the wagon will almost certainly mirror what we’ve already seen in the sedan: a highly digital cabin, large displays, a simplified dashboard, and very few physical controls. And that weird “slanted for no good reason” center screen.

We have already seem many spy shots of the new EV wagon, and the image above seems very realistic and close to the prototypes.

  1. overall, I don’t mind the more classically modest Neu Klasse designs. Its always the black plastic detailing that gets out of control and throws them off.
