Why the New Ford EV Platform Is Perfect for an Electric Mustang Convertible.

As we all know, Ford’s new Universal EV platform will be used for a new $30,000 pickup. That will be the first model. But we also know that Ford is already considering up to 8 new models for the platform. This will go beyond your regular compact, mid-size and large SUVs. They’re could be vans, sedans and more. There could also be a replacement for the Mustang mach-e. Which was actually scheduled for this summer. 

However, the one I would like to see the most is a new convertible. And yes, it would be a Mustang. 

Ford’s Andrew Frick, mentioned a few months ago the possibility of a 4-door Mustang sedan. By saying the brand wants to “expand” the Mustang family. Which is something Ford has been trying to do for many years.  The first result was the Mustang Mach-E. Which has been pretty popular and has been generally getting great reviews from the press as well as the many owners. (Over 200,000 of them so far).

Expanding woulda slowed mean new models past the Mach-e. And a sedan would probably be Ford’s first choice fir such an expansion. Last year the Mach-e had become more popular than the regular coupe and convertible. That has changed this year. While Ford doesn’t breakdown sale numbers, analysts suggest the convertible represents about 15 to 25% of total Mustang sales.  Which could be between 7500 and 15,000 units using last year’s figure. Or much more for 2026. These aren’t terrible numbers at all. And a new version base on the Universal EV platform would sure add to this number. Since the platform is enginered to be inexpensive to produce, Ford could even make money on it. 

The new convertible could easily be based on that upcoming 4 door sedan many are talking about. These new Mustang models would make perfect sense for it to use the new low-cost EV architecture. These sedan and convertible would be their own model entirely. Not a Mach-E and not simply a traditional Mustang coupe stretched into a sedan. Mr.Frick also recently mentioned: “It’s going to have to make sense within a family that we may already offer. And it’s going to have to be very cost-effective for us to do it. That’s what we’re focused on in general with a lot of our new affordable products. We want the concepts to be right and the costs to be even better.”

A convertible might often be a second car. Something most people don’t use every day. An EV powertrain with over 300 miles of range would be perfect in these situations. 

A new convertible based on the Universal EV Platform would be the perfect way to “expand” the Mustang range and name around the world.
