Ford’s future EVs.

Ford‘s Jim Farley describes August 11th as a ” Model T moment” for the company. The 11th is when we could finally see what Ford has been working on based on their all-new low-cost modular EV platform.

We got a little bit more info a few months ago when Mr.Farley mentioned there could be up to 8 models based on the new platform. Including the obvious “small pickup and SUV” combo mentioned earlier. (The bottom image is from Ford and shows what could be the silhouette of the new SUV.)

“August 11 will be a big day for all of us at Ford, we will be in Kentucky to share more about our plans to design and build a breakthrough electric vehicle and a platform in the U.S”.

While we only heard about the “secret” new platform being developed by a special team in California last year, Ford has been working on it for a while. The event on August 11th is described as “a chance to bring a new family of vehicles to the world that offer incredible technology efficiency, space, and features”. Even though we couldn’t see only the first model of the new series. Which will, of course, probably be the compact pickup truck or the SUV.

Both of these are rumored to be priced at around $30,000. Which would be extremely competitive. Even against other Ford models. Since the Ford Maverick Hybrid pickup now starts at over $28,000. And the Bronco Sport starts at $31,000.

These new EVs will be produced in the US using more cost-effective new LFP batteries produced in Ford’s all-new battery plant in Michigan.

While this might not be as radical as a Model T, the new platform could be Ford’s 21st-century equivalent to Chrysler’s K-Car platform decades ago. A brand new lower cost, and much more modern platform that ended up being used in most new Chrysler models for many years. At that time, it was also offering “incredible technology efficiency, space, and features”.

I actually can’t wait to see what Ford has been working on…

Above are some previously posted illustrations, showing what various vehicle types based on the new platform could look like.

  1. I expect only the compact EV crossover to start around $30k. Even if Ford could price a compact EV pickup for $30k, I doubt they would. More like $35k. Ford has to have a competitive compact EV to go up against the new Chevy Bolt, Nissan Leaf, and Kia EV3.
