New Affordable EV Sedan Could Finally Be a 4-Door Ford Mustang.

Ford has been hard at work on the new Universal EV platform for years now. Of course, we will see that new “sub-$30,000 EV pickup” soon, but various Ford execs keep mentioning something else. Something much more interesting. Especially if, like me, you don’t really care about pickups… One of these execs, Mr. Andrew Frick, has mentioned again the possibility of a 4-door Mustang sedan. By saying the brand wants to “expand” the Mustang family. Which is something Ford has been trying to do for many years.  The first result was the Mustang Mach-E. Which has been pretty popular and has been generally getting great reviews from the press as well as the many owners. (Over 200,000 of them so far).

Of course, what macho Mustang fans really want is a 4-door version of a Mustang GT with a good old V8. However, these he-men types don’t actually buy that many new cars, and the Mach-E has been more popular than the redesigned Mustang Coupe and Convertible. Plus, Ford isn’t working on a new ICE platform, as far as we know. And stretching the current Mustang platform to accommodate 2 more doors would be quite costly. All this to sell maybe a few 1000s more Mustangs…

I personally think a new Ford Mustang Sedan might be based on the new EV platform. It would make perfect sense for it to use the new low-cost EV architecture. It would be its own model entirely. Not a Mach-E and not simply a traditional Mustang coupe stretched into a sedan. Mr.Frick also recently mentioned: “It’s going to have to make sense within a family that we may already offer. And it’s going to have to be very cost-effective for us to do it. That’s what we’re focused on in general with a lot of our new affordable products. We want the concepts to be right and the costs to be even better.”

“Cost-effective” sounds more like using a new low-cost platform than spending dough stretching an old one, doesn’t it…

Ford is also mentioning a sub-$40,000 price for a new sedan. Which is not such a great price unless that sedan has an EV powertrain. Ford has already said it plans to focus heavily on the Bronco and Mustang brands in the years ahead. Giving its new EV sedan a Mustang identity seems like an obvious move. A reasonably priced electric Mustang sedan could have strong appeal in markets around the world, not just in North America.

The key would be making sure it actually looks like a Mustang from the beginning. Something designed around the Mustang idea from day one, instead of adapting an existing vehicle and adding Mustang-inspired styling cues later on. Like what they did with the Mustang Mach-E. A new platform. A stronger emphasis on the Mustang brand. Continued rumors of a 4-door Mustang. It all seems to line up rather well.

The illustration above shows what a new Mustang sedan based on Ford’s low-cost EV platform could look like. Something sleek, practical, and unmistakably Mustang-inspired. Most importantly, something priced not that much higher than a loaded Toyota Camry or Honda Accord.

If Ford can deliver that combination of style, performance, and affordability, this could be great news for many.
