Remember the Tesla Model 2? It was going to be Tesla’s next big thing. Elon Musk kept talking about it. It was going to be the magical $30,000 Tesla everyone could afford. It could have easily become the best selling car in the world (Since the more expensive Model Y was for a while). Then, crazy Elon killed dit.

The images above show what a smaller and cheaper 4 door Tesla model could have looked like. There was even a leak from the Chinese design studio showing a possible design for the new model. Elon even described it as “about 10% smaller than the Model Y”. It was going to be built in a brand new factory in Mexico. And another one in India. It was going to be their biggest hit. And I have no doubt it would have been.

Then Elon canceled it, and denied doing so. When the news was reported by Reuters in 2024, he claimed “Reuters is lying!”.

Now Elon is trying to sell us on the idea of a self driving 2 seater car. Something that I cannot see working very well as a ride share with just… 2 seats. Just like everything else from Tesla, it keeps being delayed. Apparently it will be launched next month now. Whatever that means. Will we be able to buy one? How many people are interested in a 2 seater car in the first place these days?

Now, we have new rumors of a smaller Tesla SUV. I guess new rumors about a smaller Tesla will pop up now and then. Every few years. Maybe even every year, just like the flu. Even though Elon himself is now bored with cars and found new toys to play with like self driving 2 seater pods and robots. He also recently mentioned that something “much cooler than a Minivan” was coming. Sure…

I personally think a smaller Tesla would have been a huge global hit. Even after the nazi salute (which many Tesla nerds are describing as the “Roman salute”). As it seems that Tesla sale numbers are actually going back up. A sub-$30,000 4 door Tesla crossover would sell like hot cakes.

This is just too bad…
