VW’s New Affordable EV Could Be Perfect for Canada.

This is the new VW ID-ERA 5X. Which is quite a mouthful. It is VW’s newest EV SUV for the Chinese market. And something that could have been welcomed here to compete against affordable EVs like the Nissan Leaf or the new Kia EV3.

The new model is based on a new platform called CMP. Which was developed with VW and XPeng. Which is what VW has been doing in China. By building and designing cars “in China, for China”. And so far, even that hasn’t been working that great and VW is indeed in trouble in the world’s largest marker.Since it turns out Chinese consumers now prefer buying Chinese products from Chinese brands.

So fat the new ID.ERA is only sold in China, but VW has already mentioned they are considering the European market as well. Which is already crowded with smaller SUV-like EVs like the ID.3 or the new ID.Cross.

However, most of the engineering of the new car has been done by XPeng and the 5X could actually end up being even cheaper than the ID.Cross. Something that would be welcome in VW’s European lineup.

The new 5X is also larger than the ID.Cross and about the same size as the larger ID.4. A cheaper, not so small model could actually make sense.

I wonder if this is something VW might also consider for the Canadian market…
