2028 Honda Civic Hatchback Hybrid Preview.
Four months ago, Honda revealed the Hybrid Sedan prototype. (bottom photo). Which was thought to be a preview of the next-generation Honda Civic or even the Accord. While in fact, it is mostly a preview of the upcoming 2nd-generation Honda Crosstour. A new Civic is still coming, and sooner than the Crosstour. The popular hatchback will also be back with an all-new platform and Hybrid powertrain.
The illustrations above give us an idea of what the next Civic hatchback could look like. One with a front-end design inspired by the Hybrid Sedan Concept/Crosstour. Something more modern than the current generation, which, in my uninformed and non-professional opinion, is not hard to do…
Honda has already allowed a few journalists to drive prototypes of the next generation, based on the new platform. And using the new, improved hybrid powertrain, almost a year ago. The prototype was heavily camouflaged, and its interior was covered. And it did have a few body panels from the current Civic to throw things off and confuse the journalist crowd.
The new Hybrid system uses a new, or heavily revised, 2-liter engine. The new direct drive and generator are also smaller than before. And the new Civic and larger Accord will share the same battery pack. The new “S+ Shift” from the Prelude will also be available on the next Civic. A totally useless gimmick if you ask me. The next Civic is also supposed to lose almost 200 pounds. (Something my old aunt Faye should seriously consider as well)
Last year, Honda was saying the new powertrain would be introduced at the end of 2026. So there is still time. However, the schedule for the US market was early 2027. Which is inline with a new Civic for the 2028 model year.
The new Civic will have a very hard task to compete against the all-new 2028 Toyota Corolla. A car that will be available with a Hybrid system as well. But also PHEV and EV. Although maybe not all powertrains will be made available in North America.
No matter what, let’s really hope for a better-looking Civic. Again, it shouldn’t be that hard…
