2028 Volvo XC60 gets Best PHEV Range in the US. .

We just saw a mid-cycle facelift on the Volvo XC60 in late 2025 for the 2026 model year. It seems it wasn’t enough, and Volvo is tinkering with their best selling SUV once more. For the 2028 model year in the US. Changes are pretty light visually, but the real news is under the hood.

While the front and rear ends have been completely redesigned, the interior seems almost the same. However, it is even better than ever. With even more of that great Volvo matte wood trim. Outside, the XC60 now looks much more like the revised XC40 we just saw a few days ago. (The XC90 is getting similar changes as well.)

The big news comes from the T8 PEHV version. It has a larger battery than before and is now rated at an almost crazy 78 miles of EV-only range. Compared to just 35 miles for the 2026 model. That basically means owners will only use gas on long trips. Or every day if they never plug that thing in. Which is apparently what most PHEV owners do.

The base non-PHEV model currently starts at around $51,000. The PHEV is about $11,000 more. Which is ridiculous, even with a 78 miles electric range. That is also more expensive than the much newer XE60 EV. Which has a 307-mile range.

The current second-generation XC60 came out in 2018 and still looks very nice. Especially inside. That’s what good design does in the first place; it lasts a long time. It is even more popular than ever, with over 41,000 of them sold in the US last year.

While I applaud the larger battery and really useful 78 miles of EV range, the PHEV is very overpriced. Volvo has already mentioned that pricing will not change much. Which is great for the $51,000 gas version. But still way too high for the $62,000 PHEV model.

Unless they offer super attractive lease payments…
