Next Acura MDX Could Be Much Bigger, With a New V6 Hybrid

This was already mentioned a few months ago, but has now been confirmed: Acura will soon have a new SUV larger than the current MDX.

It will use Honda’s new V6 Hybrid powertrain and should be out by 2028. Most people think this is an all-new model above the MDX. But somehow, I don’t think so. I don’t think Acura will redesign the MDX and add another model above it.

I think the next-generation MDX will just be larger and roomier. An MDX and some larger “XL MDX” woul dactually be too close in size and price. It didn’t seem to work with the Toyota Highlander and Grand Highlander. The larger model quickly became more popular, and the new Highlander is something completely different since the name is now used on a new EV.

As we already know, Honda/Acura has zero EV models coming to North America. That means there will not be a new MDX EV anytime soon. I think the next-generation MDX will just grow in size and will be able to seat 8 people. With a much roomier 3rd-row seat.

The current model is already a large vehicle; however, the 3rd row is pretty cramped. Nothing a few more inches cannot fix.

The illustrations above show a larger version of the MDX. One with the new 2028 RDX design language.

The new V6 Hybrid powertrain is quite interesting. And will eventually spread to all next-generation large Honda/Acura vehicles. Like the next Odyssey, Ridgeline, or Passport. All of these are getting really bad gas mileage, and any improvement will help.

I personally think something like this would work very, very well on a slightly larger new Honda Accord sedan. But who am I…

Just imagine, a super smooth V6 Accord with stellar gas mileage.
