The Lincoln Town Car Should Come Back.

A new Lincoln Town Car would be quite a comeback after over 14 years of absence. And a stunning return of the good old American luxury sedan.

Cadillac is working on a second generation CT5, but that will probably be a reskin of the current car, nothing “all-new”. And again, something too small and not that roomy. A new Town Car should be big. However, even if sednas are now selling better than they used to, there still seems to be almost zero market for expensive or large ones…

Sales of that last generation had come down to under 9500 in its last full year. Lincoln did bring back the Continental sedan for a few years in 2017. But it wasn’t the success they had hoped for. Production stopped just 3 years later. And of course, blaming it on “Americans don’t want sedans anymore”. But truly, that Continental was not what Continental fans were expecting. It was also released at a time when sedan sales were on the way down. Way down…

Of course, what would work better is a larger RWD sedan like the last Town Car. But that old Panther platform is long gone, and adapting the current Mustang platform would probably be quite costly. However, Ford is indeed working on a longer 4-door version of the Mustang. Which we assume it will use a similar platform as the current coupe and convertible. It makes you wonder if it can be stretched enough to accommodate a large Lincoln Sedan…

As I recently found out, the Town Car still has tons of fans. Of all ages, it seems. It was a super reliable car, and many of them can be bought for around $10,000 or so. Making it a great deal for those looking for a big American luxury car that isn’t too old. But really, a brand new one would be much better.

The illustrations above show what a new Lincoln Town Car could look like. A very clean and simple design that draws a bit of inspirations from past generations. Something that looks modern yet uniquely American.

Who knows…

  1. Lincoln could easily make a new Continental/Town Car vehicle. Make the Continental the consumer version, with the Town Car being a couple stretched versions. Lincoln could go EV with this, or go full retro with the 7.3L V8. Either way they’d sell these for at least $60k, preferably $80-120k. Whatever they do, the vehicles need to be massive and imposing, something the recent Continental was not.

  2. The Chrysler 300 did well for several reasons. It had big displacement and handling options packages. It was reasonably tall for drivers and passengers – so they didnt have to sit on the floor like a lot of modern sedans. And it had a decent amount of room and trunk space for the length. And it was affordable. All three of those are problematic in most modern sedans when compared to SUVs, leaving customers to ask “Do I buy a too low/too long Accord or a CRV” for the same money? Go back to the old formulas for sedans and deal with the aero issues without making them too low.

  3. Vince… have you ever gone through and looked at how many times your have posted a very similar post about the Town car. Its always the same. An AI render of a never going to happen town car. A recap of sales numbers in its final years. “I recently discovered it still has alot of fans”. and then a story of you going down a rabbit hole in the middle of night looking at how cheap you can get one for…….. We get it already. move on
