Tesla Cybertruck Dead.

It is now official: the Tesla Cybertruck will cease production next year. At least at the Tesla Texas plant. However, it is doubtful that full production would resume anywhere else, with recent terrible sale numbers.

Of course, Tesla is trying to put a good spin on canceling a model that just came out in 2024. By saying its tech will live in the Cybercab. Or that the decision was taken just to make room for Cybercab production.

The truth is, sales were down to an extremely low level. Total sales in 2024 were above 39,000 units. This was fine but far from the 250,000 a year capacity claimed by Tesla. The number went down to around 20,000 in 2025. And so far under 15,000 in 2026.

Turns out everyone who wanted one got one. Of course, there are so many reasons for the failure. The design was mocked by most of the press. (I actually like the fact that it is very diferent. Even if it can be described as “ugly”, that’s just me). Then the wait. While it was introduced in 2019, it was not available until 5 years later. And then, the actual price. Of course, Elon Musk lied about the $39,900 starting price announced in 2021. It quickly became $61,000. However, that version was not available until 2025. Of course.

Then the base version was canceled altogether and later replaced by a “new’ Long Range RWD priced at $70,000.

The fact that Elon Musk got involved in politics and started telling people who to vote for didn’t help either.

The Cybertruck will live on for a while. Tesla EVs do last a long time. I wonder how it will be seen in a few decades from now. I see it as a strange experiment. Something that very talented people worked on for a long time. And something that ultimately was destroyed by Elon Musk. From the beginning. As you can see above, very talented Tesla designers presented him with many cool futuristic designs. It seems he picked the worst one of all.

Now it seems Tesla is betting the farm on the Cybercab. A self-driving 2-seater hatchback. Again, Elon Musk claims this is what people want. Which, of course, it isn’t. Again, many Tesla superfans will buy one. The first year. Then, sales will probably tank. Tesla will then add a proper steering wheel, pedals, and mirrors (They’ve already been testing prototypes with all these), in order to boost sales. And it will. A little bit. But not enough.

Because in the end, the market for a 2-seater hatchback with a very stark and depressing-looking interior is very, very limited…

  1. The Cybertruck, if it was made with a more conventional design, it would of been a hit. Tesla needs to produce a few new models, an SUV, a smaller hatchback, and bring out all new versions of the Model 3 and Y. Have seen a few Cybercabs on the road, a 2 seater as a taxi is destined to fail. They can do all the robotics and stuff they want but autos are what currently pay the bills for them.
