Subaru Legacy/Outback Diesel

Coming out in Europe in a few weeks.
The new engine is a 2.0 Liter with 150hp.
They are talking of well over 35mpg in mixed driving. Also claiming the engine is quieter than the Passat Diesel.
Not sure if we’ll ever see this over here. But it would be in line with Subaru’s image in the US of being different.
Or at least trying to.
A diesel Outback or Forester would be a great way to do that.
A more modern 5 or 6 speed automatic transmission would really boost fuel economy across the board for all Subaru’s engines! The old 4 speed automatics went out with the 90’s.
Actually one of Subaru’s direct competitors still uses a 4 speed automatic – All Toyota RAV4 4 cylinders.
This seems like a great idea for an AWD vehicle, especially with the new cafe standards coming out. Hopefully the acceleration to 60 will be at least 8.5 or 9.0 seconds. A 6 spd auto or dsg would be nice for Subaru too.
Subaru better do something as thier fuel milage is quite poor. I wouldn’t buy this motor for a few years. Stay with the bullet proof VW and MB models.
The VW and MB diesel motors might be bulletproof, but the trim and electrical components are anything but…and unlike the German brands, the Japanese makes usually get their vehicles right out of the box; they simply don’t allow underdeveloped components to market as a rule. I’d be surprised if this engine isn’t just as reliable, if not more so, than the German brands. Sure, I have a bias. But I have owned a VW in the past, so it’s not an uninformed bias…Oh, and BTW, ‘CAR’ magazine tested the diesel Legacy (not Outback) at 8.5 0-60. Also, a 5 spd. automatic is due to be introduced in 2010 or so on all Subarus. Better late than never, right?
I’d buy it in a second. There’s also the novelty of a boxer diesel. Looks like Subaru did a good job with the power output as well, but then again Subaru knows more than enough about turbos.
As for the limited availability of the 5-speed auto transmissions, it’s a production capacity issue.
In Australia the Liberty (different name in Oz) comes with the 5spd auto on the 3.0R Premium, 3.0R Spec B, 2.5GT & 2.5GT Spec B…would have thought they’d offer it first in the states….
Nissan diesel is much superior, for quiet, power, and clean smell , subaru is really now a toyota, i think they actually build some in a camry plant. toyota has recalled more cars than any other company – That’s fact!. toyota “WAS” good, it is no longer the truth!
