Buick Le Sabre.

Last Updated:

In the past couple of years, Buick has shown a few EV sedan concepts. The most recent was the Electra GS. We also saw an Electra L concept last year. As well as an Electra LT wagon concept.

These all point to an upcoming new Buick sedan that will be based on the Ultium platform. Or an updated version of that platform. Probably shared with Cadillac’s upcoming new EV sedans.

Buick has been selling a couple of EVs with the Electra name in China for a couple of years now. While the Electra name is a great idea for a Buick EV, why not bring back the classic Le Sabre name for a possible new sedan for North America…

In various forms, the Le Sabre was produced from 1959 to 2005. Starting with the 7th generation in 1992, the Le Sabre became a cheaper version of the more expensive 1991 Buick Park Avenue. With a slightly different and less upscale design.

The second generation Park Avenue came out in 1997 and wasn’t nearly as good-looking as the 1st one. A common problem with GM cars of that era. New generations of the Oldsmobile Aurora and Cadillac Seville suffered the same problem and just looked like uninspired copies of their respective predecessors.

Just like the new Park Avenue, the 1998 Buick Le Sabre was not a looker. The Buick Le Sabre was discontinued in 2005, and replaced by the Buick Lucerne in 2006. Which was basically a new generation Le Sabre with a new name. That car was itself discontinued in 2011 and replaced by the redesigned Buick Lacrosse. The 3rd generation LaCrosse was killed in the US in 2019. As sales had gone all the way down to around 7000 units. Or less than half what they were the previous year.

By that time, the big American sedan had become something almost nobody wanted…

A new Buick sedan is almost a sure thing for the Chinese market. We’ll have to see if GM is ready to take a chance and offer a new sedan in the US as well.

  1. Nice design, Buick. Much better than that crap-tastic Batman inspired BS Acura is pushing. Thats why they can’t raise their car prices without decreasing their sales. John Mendel was wrong – they’d never make it to Tier1 under him or his later minions.

  2. Vince it did my old heart good to see the name Buick LeSabre, but beyond that, I think your design looks better than the Electra L and the Electra GS. C’mon Buick, Vince has done your work for you!
