1970s TV Cars today.
Last Updated:
lately, I’ve been watching quite a few old TV shows. Streaming here and there.
In these old cop shows, the main character’s cars always seem to be part of the cast somehow. Like Columbo’s car. A very rare 1959 Peugeot that somehow this L.A cop found somewhere.
Or that bright red and black Gran Torino in Starsky and Hutch. Something to cop in their right mind would actually drive around while on the job.
A much more realistic choice was Jim Rockford’s Pontiac Firebird Formula 400. A basic inconspicuous model with the big V8 was exactly what the character needed.
The big Ford LTD sedan Mike Stone drove in the streets of San Francisco was also are realistic choice since it seems every police department was driving these in the 70s. That, and of course, the fact that the producer of the show, Quinn Martin, had a deal with Ford.
A new Pontiac Firebird is highly unlikely since the whole brand is gone. However, a new or future convertible from Peugeot could happen, one day. At least Peugeot is still around.
Ford has given up on cars and a new Gran Torino is probably never going to happen. Unless we see a 360 shift in the car market in a few years, where people all of a sudden hate SUVs and demand large 2-door cars. Who knows…
It would be the same for the LTD. Ford killed sedans in the US when the Fusion was discontinued. And everyone else killed their full-sized sedans a while ago.
Watch this very short video above to see what could have been…
