Lincoln Town Car.

Last Updated:

The Lincoln Town Car disappeared in 2011. Could a new one bring back the classic big American luxury sedan?

Probably. If anyone actually buys it that is. Lincoln brought back the Continental sedan for the 2017 model year and it wasn’t the success they had hoped for. Production stopped just 3 years later. And of course, blaming it on “Americans don’t want sedans anymore”.

What Americans didn’t want was a Lincoln Continental based on the Ford Mondeo. Sure, it was longer, but it just didn’t look the part. And it wasn’t a replacement for the Town Car either. It was also pretty expensive and had tons of super cheap-looking plastic chrome trim inside.

What would work better is a larger RWD sedan like the last Town Car. Of course, that Panther platform is long gone, and adapting the current Mustang platform would probably be very costly.

This might sound blasphemous to the old guard, but a large EV platform would be the only way to revive the Town Car. It would instantly become quieter and more powerful than it has ever been. Without even trying hard.

No one really knows what Ford is doing with their future EVs, (maybe not even Ford itself). We only know a 2nd generation Mustang Mach-e is still scheduled for the end of next year, and 2 new smaller models are coming later this year. A small pickup and of course an SUV. Both are based on a brand new simpler EV platform. And they will probably be called “BRonco something”.

A large EV platform for big 3-row SUVS has been delayed. That is probably the only one a new large sedan could use.

Cadillac is working on 2 new EV sedans. We are supposed to see these “soon” as they say. Let’s hope it will push Ford to compete by adding a new sedan to their SUV-only lineup.

As I recently found out, the Town Car still has tons of fans. Of all ages, it seems. It was a super reliable car and many of them can be bought for around $10,000 or so. Making it a great deal for those looking for a big luxury car that isn’t too old. And then, you start looking at various generations of the Lexus LS (why not). These are also not very expensive and reliable. And probably more sophisticated than the Town car.

Later, you realize you don’t really want to spend $10,000 on a car you don’t need at all. And that you just spent way too much time watching Lincoln TownCar/Lexus LS videos and maybe it’s just time to go to bed…

  1. I like it. If anything, the Town Car should a bit taller to ease access to the back seat. See what Rolls Royce and even BMW iSeries have done. Make it super comfortable, we don’t need wide and low.

and please bring back actual bumpers, unsure why the latest styling trend is to have some sort of vestigial rear bumper, these cars are just prone to damage from parking lot incidents and low speed fender benders making them more expensive to insure.

  2. Ford does have a fairly new RWD platform that they’ve seen to have forgotten about. There were rumors years ago that the Mustang, Ford Edge, Nautilus, and two sedans were to ride on the Aviator’s rear wheel drive CD6 platform. Unfortunately, those and other possible CD6 projects were cancelled. It’s just the Explorer and Aviator for now.

It’s a shame because I think that platform had a lot of potential. Right now I think they will continue utilizing the front wheel drive C2 platform and the new electric platforms.

  3. I’m a Lincoln owner and I’m waiting on this new Continental if it comes out looking as nice as the pictures I’ve seen. I’m buying hopefully it’s not pricey like some of the new Cadillacs.

  4. I Love the New Lincoln Town Car. Simply Beautiful and Very Elegant Looking Automobile. Hope they bring the Cartier Designer Series back. It was a Beautiful and Very Elegant Looking Automobile. My oldest sister and brother in law owned a1984
    Lincoln Town Car Cartier Series.

  5. My God the car looks fantastic! I wish Ford would wake up and see the writing on the wall and bring back the Lincoln Especially this one you got the design right on mark
    Pun intended

  6. The 2017 Continental was not a comfortable car with 32 way power seats and it was front wheel drive with a V6. It might as well be in a Toyota Camry. I wanna buy any car that’s electric power that’s not green. It’s hazardous to the environment and a town car should have a full frame. That’s what makes it ride so nice. It does not need 22 inch tires low profile tire do nothing for the ride bring back an old school luxury car that rides nice is comfortable and dependable rear wheel drive V8 engine without a turbo charger or supercharger. I have owned a 11 Lincoln‘s so far in my lifetime and one of my LINCOLN‘s came out of Wixom Michigan. The latest continental was made with Mustangs that was sad.. and now all Lincoln’s come off the same assembly lines with their Ford counterpart. If you want LINCOLN to be a grade above a Ford product, they should not be made with Ford’s. They should have their own assembly plant.

  8. I had a 78 Lincoln Town car very comfortable the seats was almost over your shoulders power rear-wheel drive you need to go back to to what made it popular the first time and stop putting plastic parts in the car like the air condition vents that’s plastic if you were to get into a Mercedes or BMW they don’t have plastic parts they have a 500 horsepower engine Ford put a 400 power engine and a big body car 6 cylinder that’s not enough power Ford better Business over 100 years and they can’t figure this out people will pay for something good like that old say you always get what you pay for that’s all

  9. Please build a new Town Car! It is so very sad GM, FoMoCo, and Chrysler are either out of the sedan making business, or will be leaving it. The 2nd generation Town Car was as well built and as capable as practically anything built on the planet. Perhaps that was due to the overseas involvement in it development, as noted in the story of the FN 36 project. What replaced that car, was not very attractive, and it’s redo was some better, but it wasn’t a great car. My 2004 was not near the car my 93 was. Thanks to our domestic car manufacturers getting out of the car business and their offerings are crossover SUVs, I opted to buying German and Japanese makes of sedans, which have performed very well so far, but I would love to have a new Town Car as my mode of transportation.

  10. I have a 2009 Lincoln Towncar Executive Limited and I love it! I’ve owned my fair share of Lincolns, 2-Mark VII (white one & gold one), 1-Mark V (white), 4-Towncars (blue, white), (white with black cloth top & blue with blue cloth top). I wish I could’ve kept each one of them. Lincoln always represented true class & elegance. Bring them back, BUT, keep them the class & elegance they’ve always been! DO NOT MAKE THEM TO LOOK LIKE THEIR FORD BY PRODUCT(S)…….DEFINITELY NOT AFTER THE MUSTANG OR ANY OTHER MODEL! I know everyone likes the new EV concept but don’t ruin an awesome luxury car by making an EV and that being the only way it’s made. I’d rather pay for fuel in my car than to have to charge a car for up to 8 hours and then you’re able to drive again…….especially when traveling…….just my own opinion.

  11. I have owned several Lincolns in my life and never had a “bad” one. Please listen to the majority of older citizens in the US and the world and build a full size Town Car. The elegance of the Town Car with ease of handling and flat out superior looks would be a welcome addition to our roads. Stop building enormous SUVs that little women don’t know or can’t drive property
