Buick Roadmaster wagon.

Last Updated:

The last Buick Roadmaster Wagon was produced back in 1996. Would it be time for a new one?

The Roadmaster was one of Buick‘s most famous models and started life in 1936. It wasn’t produced all the way to 1996 without any interruptions. As there was no Roadmaster produced in 1944 and 1945. And especially, the name was discontinued after 1958. Production started again for one last generation from 1991 to 1996.

After 33 years the Buick Roadmaster returned in 1991 and shared its B-body platform with the Chevrolet Caprice, sedan, and wagon. As well as the Oldsmobile custom cruiser. The Cadillac version of these cars used a slightly different D-body platform.

Sales were pretty impressive in 1992 with over 70,000 sold. However, by 1996, that number had gone down to 21,500. GM discontinued the whole thing. By then, large sedans weren’t a thing anymore. and huge wagons like the Roadmaster were already being replaced by large SUVs.

Still, it seems that after almost 30 years, more people are getting tired of SUVs. A large wagon would be quite refreshing these days. These last-generation Buick Roadmaster wagons are actually pretty popular in the used car market these days.

GM has a very versatile Ultium platform already used on many vehicles of different sizes. An Ultium-based large Buick wagon wouldn’t seem to be an impossible thing to do. Especially since the Chinese market loves Buick. and has nothing against new wagons with many currently offered.

I also think Buick could offer something sleeker and better-looking than the new Enclave. Which to me seems like a step back from the previous generation.

A 3-row large “wagon-type” luxurious vehicle could be a way for Buick to offer something a bit different…

  1. What, no wood grain option? LOL. I would really like for Buick to offer another Roadmaster wagon or any wagon. But Vince this design seems very plain. Buick is / should be “Exceptional by design.”

  2. My daily driver is a magnificent 1995 Roadmaster Limited, Corvette LT-1 engine and all. I drove a 1971 VW Bus for 30 years before. Each of them was an amazing cutting edge vehicle when I bought them. Maybe I can find a Roadmaster wagon to haul new plastic parts to keep the Buick going??

  3. Love those 90’s Roadmaster wagons. Currently own a 2018 Regal Tourx wagon; one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned. It’s a rebadged Opel Insignia, built in Germany.

  4. It’s a long time coming.had a Caprice and a roadmaster.my family also had ltd wagons,Pontiac safari wagons.as long as any new wagon has a real tailgate with perhaps built in disappearing flip up seats or pull out table. Can’t wait.

  5. If Buick (and others) would go back to producing wagons to meet the demand, then perhaps we poor folks could afford to buy vintage American wagons once again! — they might go back down to what four-door sedans sell for.

  6. I’m a Very Proud owner of a 1996 Roadmaster Collection Series Wagon Woodie and I could sell it every time I drive it,You get the looks and coment of those who remember them back in the day,I simply Love mine and trying as hard as I can to keep her healthy ❤️

  7. Unfollow I’ve read that GM is considering sunsetting the Buick brand in North America.

  8. New Roadmaster, Yes, the above rendering No? Where are the portholes? The tailgate looks like a direct copy of a Lincoln Aviator and finally it looks more SUV-ish than a true wagon!

  9. I think this would be a big hit!
Sorry to disagree with others but I do like the styling and if the interior were comfortable and well equipped I think it’d be a great new direction to go over the standard looking SUV styling of most vehicles. I loved our family’s one we had with the glass on the edge of the roof. Really a cool looking concept!

  10. I hve a 2019 TourX 8 speed turbo 2.0 it’s a fast sleek luxury vehicle, yea they say it’s luxury sport touring. It’s a Buick rides well it’s still got a gm 2.0 l eco which is it’s problem it’s temperamental car too much service for it but. I love this car and to. Not have em made. By Buick it’s rarity besides the aesthetics of a Buick it’s been a ride keeping it if I can for those aspects before I buy another Buick brand new they need to bring a standard manufactured warranty and full extent warranty quit putting these 4cyls in with turbo with 10.1 ratio six or a small v-8 and put premium components on better like a gs suspension steering my 06 4×4 GMC. Work style truck turned better. but as long as the truck the car is to throw down wagon style cars not creepy cruiser a real wagon bring it to. Hypo vehicle but seriously full up the engine compartment with more as far cylinders horsepower leave eco’ s in the past build efficient 8 cylinders with transmission that will last quit with pretending that what I got in my car is good . It’s not people Buicks to be strong and want luxury especially in gs or ss and dump the small 4 cyl junk

  11. Ford did this with the Ford Flex…a true station wagon and really popular
