Ford Mustang Mach-4 rumor.

Last Updated:

This is a rumor that actually dates from the 1960’s. A 4 door version of the Ford Mustang has been talked about for decades, yet never came to production.

However, Motor Trend is reporting that a 4-door Mustang, called the Mach-4, was actually shown at a recent dealer meeting. As well as an off-road version of the Mustang. The off-road bit matches what we’ve heard before about Ford wanting to get into the off-road sports car business. Which is probably another high-margin segment many dream about. And these dollar signs are hard to resist.

Before anyone gets excited about a new 4-door Mustang, let’s remember the current model is a flop. It only sold around 44,000 units last year. When a new model in its first year is usually much more successful than the old one, it actually sold fewer units than the old version. And fewer than the Mustang Mach-e EV.

A 4-door version of that car would also inherit the terrible interior of the current coupe and convertible. With its ghastly rectangular screens that are actually blasphemous in a Mustang. And most of the rest of that interior being carried over from the previous generation. Even the Mach-e interior looks more like a Mustang interior.

Again, this is not a popular car. A new 4 door version might only add a few more sales a year. Probably not much. On the other hand, the upcoming 4 door version of the 2025 Dodge Charger looks amazing. And it will be available in both EV and ICE powertrains. That car has much more of a chance than a 4 door version of the current disappointing Mustang. Unless Ford actually spends some real money on the project and comes up with an all-new design. (The illustrations above show what a new design for a 4- door Mustang could look like)

I’m just saying…

  1. True. However, the Mach-e sales are up. Ford is just so crazy right now though. Farley hasn’t been a steady helm. And after cancelling the Escape, there’s no predicting what bad decision he’ll pull next.
